Chapter 22: Lost without you

"Aria don't listen to them." Kai sighed.

The girl was on a call with him as she was in need of talking to someone. "They're just jealous people."

"It increased the past weeks." Aria whimpered. "The comments under my posts are filled with hate and insults and it's absolutely horrible."

The footballer never knew how hard the hate affected the girl. He had always seen her as someone who just read over that and shrugged it away.

But naturally, the amount of mean comments doesn't leave a person unaffected and Aria was an absolute mess at the moment.

"Do you know what happened that the hate is increasing?"

"I have absolutely no clue" Aria shrugged, a tear rolling down her cheek.

Everything fiber of Kai wanted to grab through the screen and wipe it off. Her eyes were too beautiful to cry so much.

"I miss you Kai."

"I miss you more Aria."

The two of them at a friendship that was filled with fun, jokes and laughs, but both of them were there for the other one, if they needed to talk.

Kai knew Thomas Tuchel would rip his head off if he knew that Kai was skipping good night sleep before a match, just to call Aria but right now Kai couldn't care less.

He took another close look at Aria. His eyes wandered over her quivering lips to her bloodshot eyes. Her face was puffy and red from crying but still Kai couldn't deny that Aria was the most beautiful girl he had ever met.

"When was the last time you slept?" The footballer asked her worriedly when the deep bags under her eyes caught his attention.

As if on cue a yawn escaped Arias mouth.

"I couldn't sleep." The girl confessed silently.

"You need to rest Aria. It's times like this that it is especially important you stay mentally strong." Kai said with a soft voice and Aria nodded.

"I'll try to get a good sleep tonight." Another yawn fell from her lips. "It's only five pm here."

Kai saw how her yes dropped more and more. "You need to go to sleep Aria. Now."

"I can't!"

"I'll tell you a story. To help you ease up a little." Kai managed to make Aria smile at that, even through all the tears.

Telling each other stories to help them fall asleep, was something Kai and Aria had started doing when they were apart. Both of the friends still suffered from nightmares and now that they couldn't hold each other, they tried to find comfort in the familiar voices.

"Okay." Aria gave in with a soft sigh and dropped down on her bed, snuggling into the cushions and closing her eyes.

Trying to take her mind off the cruelty of the world he decided to tell her the heartwarming story of how he got his first donkeys.

Despite the fact that Aria knew the story, he had told it to her a lot more times as it was one of her favorites.

And who would have guessed but his soothing voice helped Aria fall asleep, like no sleep pill could ever. The last thing she remembered before the sleep fully consumed her was Kai lightly chuckling, lost in the memory of his birthday.
