——

It had started as a completely normal day at Aldera Junior High.

A completely normal day.

Was that really a good way to describe this?

One student was missing. His seat was empty, the mean words of torment written on his desk from yesterday were still visible.

Where was he?

The athmosphere was off. Katsuki already knew this day wouldn't be a good one. He didn't know what exactly was wrong, but his gut told him he'd remember that day forever.

It was right.

The teachers acted weirdly too. Sometimes they were just teaching normally, sometimes they'd seemed weirdly absent, and during breaks they talked to each other in hushed voices. They also seemed regretful, for some reason.

None of the students knew what had happened (yet). Some of them still wish today that they'd never found out.

During the last lesson of the day, about ten minutes before the school day was over the principal walked into their classroom.

Before the principal had been able to get a word in, one of Katsuki's friends, if it's appropriate to call them that, had already made a comment making fun of the man's appearance.

The principal sighed, and started speaking, ignoring the comment. He pointed out the empty seat, where Izuku would've sat. He asked the class if any of them knew why that student wasn't there.

The athmosphere got even heavier. No one said a word. A couple students shook their heads. Most of them were looking anywhere but the principal at that moment. Some weren't looking at anything, others were staring at the empty seat. Katsuki was dreading what the principal would say next.

He had a feeling that he knew what it'd be.

This wasn't the first time that Izuku missed class. And it wasn't the first time that no one knew why he was gone. But it was the first time that the teacher behaved so weirdly, it was the first time that the athmosphere had been off the entire day. And it was also the first time that the teacher even acknowledged Izuku's absence.

This was the first time it'd ever been such a big deal. This was the first time it had ever mattered.

Katsuki swallowed.

The classroom was so silent, you'd hear a pin drop.

Katsuki's heart was beating. He'd never been religious, but for some reason he was praying to every god he could think of. He was panicking.

The principal said exactly what they didn't want to hear.

"Izuku Midoriya is dead."

The silence in that room was deafening. No one dared to speak.

"He jumped off the school roof yesterday after class ended."

Katsuki's so-called friends stared at him. It was obvious what they were thinking.

The silence was broken by their teacher. "It's a shame," he said, "I'd never noticed that he was struggling." The techer did sound regretful, but there was also a hint of apathy in his voice.

It made Katsuki feel sick. He had no right to judge, though.

The principal and the teacher went on to say their condolences, and more empty words. Soon, the bell rang.
