Chapter Thirty Seven

“What?” Leon says. “I think you've confused me with someone else.” Panthera says. “No I haven't. Where’s Connor? He’s your best friend Panthera, stop pulling my tail here.” Leon says. “I’m sorry, I really don’t know anyone named Connor.” Panthera says. Leon turns to Persephone, growling. “What did you do to her? Why doesn’t she remember Connor?” Leon says. Anger is rolling off of Leon in waves and Persephone flinches. “Go play with sissy.” she says and Finn and Panthera take off. “What the hell did you do!” Leon snaps. Persephone flinches before straightening up. “I wiped her memory. Finn wanted a sister. I wanted my daughter back.” she says indifferently. “Give her her memories back. Now!” Leon says just as Connor barrels through the trees with Candance right behind, carrying Katy. Panthera puts Finn behind her protectively. Connor’s face lights up when he sees her and she shifts automatically, pushing Finn farther behind her. Leon runs over and explains what happened and Connor looks beyond pissed. “What did you do to her?” he yells, turning to Persephone. Panthera jumps in front of her protectively. “Move Panthera.” Persephone says. Panthera looks back at Persephone and she nods. Panthera drops her tail, lays her ears back, and moves. She stares at Connor, watching for threats. “Why?” Connor asks. Persephone walks forward and Panthera drops down on her stomach, ready to pounce if needed. “I wanted my daughter back.” Persephone says. Connor walks forward. “Then why did you have to erase her memories?” he asks, right in her face. “Because she would have gone right back to you.” Persephone says. “Prove it.” Connor says. Persephone waves her hand and Panthera shifts. “Connor!” she says happily. “If I had taken you to come live with me and your brother. Would you have? Or would you have stayed with Connor?” Persephone asks. “Oh. I would have stayed with Connor and came to visit you all the time. So I didn’t have to lose anyone.” Panthera says. Persephone waves her hand and Panthera shifts, getting back into her defensive stance. “What? So you didn’t want to share your daughter? You would rather have had this fake, modified version of her than the real one?” Leon says. Persephone drops her head. “Panthera, take Finn and go. I don’t care where, just go as far away as possible.” Persephone says. Panthera runs and shifts. She gets in the house and grabs the safety bag, and a jacket for Finn. She puts the jacket and backpack on Finn and shifts. Finn climbs on and they take off just as the ground splits between them. Panthera runs faster, trying to get away. Finn clings to her back and cries. Panthera stops, getting her memories back. She growls and takes off back towards the house. She gets there just as Persephone snaps Connor’s neck.
