Chapter 32: Riverside Boardwalk
One Year Later
I was the last one to walk out of the monthly board meeting held by the co-founders of the company—my parents and Rushil's.
Saloni followed me to the break room to grab a cup of coffee. I took a cup of the black liquid and handed one to her. We didn't add extra ingredients to watch our weights.
"I'm still having a hard time getting back on track," she said and sipped her coffee.
"I'm sure," I said.
Rushil and Saloni got married less than two months ago. After a few months of Rushil's hard chasing and my blessings, Saloni had given him a chance. A year later, he proposed and she accepted. Their wedding was the party of the year and all of us including Jash had a blast. Then, these two ran off to Europe for their honeymoon for two weeks without telling the staff. Rushil was lucky his parents owned the company or he and his wife would've never been seen again. Today was her second day back to work.
"How's Jash?" she asked. "Still in Minnesota?"
After our trip to India, our careers took the topmost priority especially for Jash. He needed enough experience and money first to open his own private practice. His job at the Minnesota clinic was supposed to be for one year but Jash decided to proceed with another year to learn everything. I had supported him with his decision.
I nodded. "One more month left for his two years to complete."
She sipped her coffee. "You don't look excited."
"He wants to put in one more year," I informed. When he broke the news to me, I had to swallow back my frustration by his decision and support him more. He claimed he needed to save more money. Even though I insisted on helping him with his downpayment, he had downright refused.
"Aw man, I have to wait another year to dance at your wedding," Saloni said.
"It gives me another year to plan the wedding." I gave her a weak smile. She patted my arm.
That was how I had been consoling myself lately. One more full year of getting Friday evening flights to Minnesota with late Sunday night returns. Sometimes Jash did that whenever a long weekend was coming to visit us back home.
My parents after the first year of my relationship with Jash started pushing the marriage topic. They had grown to admire him and his ambition along with his commitment to me.
Believe me, I loved him for that too.
Him working hard on his specialty made me work hard on my parents' company too. Rushil, Saloni, and I were a force not to mess with when we worked. We had raised the stock value of our company by a trifold in the last three years.
Being with Jash brought out the best in me.
I wanted us to continue being together forever. With less distance. Start a family soon maybe. Have a less hectic life.
Another year to go.
I spent the rest of the day busy with office work.
The hard work continued for the next two days. I spent Friday anxiously waiting for Jash. He ended up texting me he'd be late coming home and to meet him on Saturday evening instead.
Why not Saturday morning and afternoon?
I needed to give him time to spend with his family too.
Saloni's talk had made my heart ache and I reminded myself continuously that Jash was almost finished with his contract. If he wanted to work an additional year, I'd wait.
