Chapter 24: Ek Chutki Sindoor (One pinch vermillion)

Keerat brought her own sari upstairs as she helped us all get dressed in saris.

"What are we doing?" Saloni asked uneasily.

"Having fun," Keerat replied. "My friends and I do this at slumber parties back in Delhi. We wear saris and act our cringey Bollywood movie scenes and dance to songs. Getting drunk helps."

"Nope," I said shaking my head. "We're leaving tomorrow morning. No hangovers."

She laughed. "I figured you'd say that. I brought this instead."

She took out three glass bottles of a soda called Limca and handed us one each. She also brought gummy candies, hard candies, and chocolate bars.

"We're gonna be sugar high," I said to Saloni.

"I'm going to have to work out a lot when we return," mumbled my friend.

"Let's get this party started," Keerat said loudly. "I got our first dialogue, too, ladies."

She handed me her phone where we first watched the video and then her enactment of it.

She rose to her feet and grabbed a red gummy bear.

"'Ek chutki sindoor ki keemat tum kya jaano Ramesh Babu (How would you know the price of one pinch vermilion, Mr. Ramesh?'"

She put the gummy bear in the middle part of her hair before popping it into her mouth.

Saloni and I clapped at her performance.

"Thank you, thank you," she bowed. "Who wants to go next?"

Seeing Saloni's hesitate, I volunteered. I helped myself to a blue gummy bear to match my sari.

I repeated the dialogue in my broken hindi, earning laughter from my companions. Saloni threw a gummy bear at me and booed.

She went next and acted out the dialogue with such a serious expression that both Keerat and I stared at her in awe.

"Did I say it wrong?" Saloni asked wincing.

"You were incredible!" I said amazed.

"We will award you a gummy Oscar for your performance today." Keerat bowed and handed Saloni a golden gummy bear. "And your acceptance speech."

Saloni wiped fake tears. "'Itni shiddat se maine tumhe paane ki koshish ki hai . . . ki har zarre ne mujhe tumse milane ki saazish ki hai (I have wanted you so much, so truly . . . that the entire universe has conspired for me to get you)."

Keerat whistled and I clapped hard at Saloni's filminess.

The Bollywood themed slumber party continued into the night with a few adults knocking on our door to go to sleep.

We were high on sugar, Bollywood, and emotions.

Keerat was a beautiful person inside and out. I sincerely hoped her boyfriend treated her well. She didn't deserve to be a victim of abuse.

We danced to a few songs and then rated Bollywood actors on a scale of one to ten.

"I'm parched," I said sitting down on the bed. "The sugar and the soda isn't helping."

"Everyone's asleep by now. Do you wanna grab a water bottle from the fridge?" Keerat asked. "I can go get it for you."

She started rising up from the floor where she and Saloni were arguing over whether Hrithik Roshan looked sexier in Dhoom 2 or Bang Bang.
