Chapter 3: Always Appreciate the Boobs

Jash's secrecy made me follow him all the way to the unauthorized area at the topmost floor of the hotel.

The dentist gestured me to follow him onto the rooftop through the doors.

"Are you trying to kill me?" I asked quietly as I hesitated in the doorway. "I've seen enough shows and movies to know better than to follow someone to the rooftop."

"Don't make me drag you," he threatened.

I followed him to the rooftop which was as empty as it could've been except for a few bricks. Why the hotel owners couldn't invest in the rooftop to make something exotic up here was beyond me.

Jash took me to the edge and pointed to the view of the city.

"This isn't exciting. It's so cliched," I said unimpressed.

"Do you want me to push you over the ledge to make it exciting?"

I rolled my eyes and positioned myself next to him to absorb Delhi.

Even though I hated to admit it, the view captured most of the city I had imagined.

The sky hugging buildings, the honking of traffic even at nine at night, the bickering of street vendors and customers—everything felt like . . . home. It was beautiful.

I even saw Qutab Minar.

I never thought I'd be attracted to a city as much as this (despite all the pollution). The last busy city I had visited with my family was New York City. It was chaotic there with heavy traffic but nothing compared to here.

Somehow, the people there didn't strike me as friendly as the ones who had given us directions to our hotel, told us restaurants to check out nearby, or even gave us their phone numbers if we ever had a question.

Something about them felt familiar not just our skin.

It was perhaps because I didn't know these people. I didn't have to worry about them judging me. I didn't have to think about going to work the next day.

I was on vacation.

"A penny for your thoughts?" Jash interrupted.

"My thoughts are not on sale," I told him.

He turned to face me completely instead of looking over the city.

"You're ungrateful." He crossed his arms.

My mouth formed an "o" at his statement. "You brought me to a rooftop full of polluted air to see the city. You expect me to be grateful?"

His face fell and he turned to leave.

"Jash, of course, I'm grateful," I said quickly. "I was messing with you. I didn't expect you to be thoughtful enough after . . . Never mind. We should ask the others to come up here too. You'll be a crowd favorite."

I pulled out my iPhone but he put his hand on it.

"Don't call them. We should go back too," he said, nodding his head towards the exit door. I figured he worried about all of us getting caught. "We have a long ride ahead tomorrow."

"I don't know if I'm ever going to visit India again," I said and turned back to observe the city. "Let's stay a bit longer. I mean, only if you want to."

"Are you kidding me? An extra five minutes to spend with the princess? Totally." He gave me a swift wink before joining my side.

"This is the most respect I've gotten from you," I observed. "What did I do to deserve this?"
