Chapter 2: Welcome to India
I had booked my ticket in the economy class like Saloni. That left Rushil in the business class without me. Whenever we travelled, it was usually side-by-side in business class.
Economy felt strange when I sat down in the middle seat. On my left, a teenage boy leaned his head against the window and headphones in his ears. Either he was asleep or trying to.
Was I supposed to acknowledge him?
I had no idea.
I hoped no one would sit on my other side, so I could get some elbow room. I closed my eyes and mentally prepared myself for the flight and the rest of the adventure.
"Can I get in?"
I completely ignored the person, too occupied thinking about Rushil and his mystery girl.
"Fiza. Hello. Wakey, wakey. People are staring at you."
I nearly jumped and banged my head on the overhead compartment. I winced, rubbing the spot. I came close to the last person I wanted to see on the trip.
"Jash," I recognized flatly.
"Dr. Jash." The dark haired guy winked before positioning himself next to me. I almost groaned, knowing I had to sit next to him the whole ride.
It did not help that he was six foot with muscular arms that were going to be accidentally bumping into mine till we landed. Of course, he had gained more muscle and more definition on his body since the last time I had seen him.
Just because he looked better now didn't mean I forgave him for making my freshmen and sophomore years hell in high school.
"You finished dental school?" I asked. I knew the answer but didn't want him to think I was interested in his life.
"Two months ago," Jash replied. "I sent my graduation invitation to you and Rushil."
I recalled Rushil bringing it up and I had refused to go. Saloni ended up going with Rushil to congratulate Jash on finishing dental school. My grudge was too tremendous to let go easily.
"I totally forgot," I told him.
"Rushil told me you were still mad at me," he said.
"It's hard to forgive bullies," I responded. The plane was taking off and I was thankful for the conversation. It fought against my nausea.
"Bully?" He nearly laughed.
"Bumping into me, slapping the books out of my hands so they fall on the floor, and continuously calling me a nerd and a dork are a few examples," I told him.
He had tormented me for two years until Rushil stepped in. Technically, Jash moved into my neighborhood. All of my neighborhood friends would be playing some sport during the evenings. Somehow, he ended up mixing into our circle. I had forced Rushil to talk to Jash and stop the bullying. It had worked.
Jash didn't clear anything. Instead, he asked, "Where's your boyfriend? I saw Saloni in one of the front seats."
"I dunno where he is," I told him. "Also, he's not my boyfriend. I'd appreciate it if we don't talk about it."
His chocolate brown eyes raised in surprise. "That's not good."
"What?"
"You're no longer under his protection spell," he said seriously. "That leaves you vulnerable to the male species." He grinned.
"Jash, get a life."
"It's Dr. Jash."
"You don't have a girlfriend, do you?" I asked not caring how mean I sounded. "Dr. Jash."
