Chapter 5: Over My Dead Body

Jash laid on an uncomfortable white bed that looked like it had been in the hospital since Independence, just like the rest of the room. The dim green walls, the flimsy curtains, and the machinery next to the bed worried me more.

Nevertheless, I was determined.

"Jash, you've proven to be the biggest idiot since Juliet," I told him.

I pulled up a chair next to his bed.

"What are you talking about?" he asked weakly.

"Juliet took poison for Romeo and later stabbed herself," I explained. "You punched the guy for your Juliet and got stabbed."

"That's n—not true," he denied.

"Don't worry, I won't tell Saloni anything," I assured the idiot. "Do enlighten me why you didn't say something about your injury? Did dental school teach you to stitch yourself up with floss?"

He chortled before clutching his stomach. "Fiza, don't make me laugh."

"Don't make me punch you." I gave him a solemn look.  "I still can't believe you didn't say a word about this!"

"Are you worried about me?"

He sat up slowly, leaning against the head of the bed. I helped him with the pillow and made sure he wasn't stressing his abdomen.

"You didn't say one word about your injury, Jash!" I complained, feeling horrible. "Were you waiting to pass out?"

"It's not that bad."

"Not that bad? Do you see this?" I picked up his bloody jacket from a tray nearby and held it up.

"Fiza," he said with a smile.

"Why are you smiling at your blood? This is not funny!"

"Fiza—"

"You could've gotten infected and we wouldn't have known!"

"Fiza—"

"I know my name!" I snapped angrily.

I realized a little late that it was someone behind me who had called my name this time and not Jash.

Eric and Rushil stood afraid in the doorway. I wasn't sure which one if the two had interrupted me or how long they had been standing there.

Rushil's arm was covered in a white bandage. Eric stood by his side as if his bodyguard.

"What happened here?" Rushil asked me. "We just read your texts and saw your missed calls. My doctor was too busy asking us about America."

"Ask your stupid fight mate," I said not knowing why my tone was livid.

I left the room to let them talk it out between themselves. They needed to reflect on their actions. While I didn't blame them for sticking up for Saloni, they shouldn't have allowed the situation to escalate to the point of getting stabbed.

The ride back was dead silent since the boys knew I was ready to pounce at their throats any second.

When we entered the house, the aroma of Indian food hit us and I forgot about the boys. I rushed to the kitchen and helped myself to the naan bread and the various dals (lentil soups) and vegetables.

"The caretaker brought it for us when she found out about our eventful day," Chynna told me. She was finishing her plate while her sister and Saloni talked to the men.

Saloni was profusely apologizing for no reason. It wasn't her fault some random weirdo grabbed her and Jash tried to fight for her like a Bollywood hero.
