Chapter 11: Saada Pind (Our Village)

He's totally interested in you.

I had woken up earlier than everybody else with Saloni's words echoing in my head. The mere possibility of Jash's interest in me was giving me strange feelings. I scolded myself for these disgusting thoughts. How could I even consider hurting my best friend? Jash liked her!

I readied myself early and went to the hotel lobby to see if Yogesh was ready. We paid for his accommodation wherever we stayed. He was away from family for two weeks for us. We owed as much.

I found Yogesh and Jash both entering into the hotel with a bag in their hands.

"I thought I was early," I said in surprise when I saw them.

"I ran out of bandages and medicine," Jash said pointing to his stomach. "Yogesh took me to the nearest dispensary."

"Your wound is healing, right?" I asked worried. "You haven't stretched it out or anything?"

"Yes mom, I'm fine."

I narrowed my eyes at him. "You—"

"Come with me. Eric has major news," he intervened. "Yogesh, we'll be down in two hours."

Yogesh smiled and gave us a thumbs up.

I followed behind Jash who refused to disclose any more information about Eric. He took me to the hotel room he shared with Eric and slowly opened the door.

"Be careful," he said blocking my view. "These stunts are performed by trained professionals; do not try this at home."

I pushed in disregarding his warning only to find Eric doing somersaults and cartwheels and back flips in the hotel room. The two beds were pushed to the side to give him more space.

"Is he possessed?" I asked Jash.

Jash laughed before stopping Eric from a somersault. Eric was taken aback because he hadn't heard us enter. His black hair was out of the usual ponytail and fell down to his shoulder. Sweat cascaded down his temples to his neck.

"Fiza, check this out!" Eric exclaimed, bringing his laptop to me. He pointed towards the open email sitting in the middle of the screen.

After reading it, I looked between him and Jash.

"You got accepted into Masterchef?" I asked carefully in a low voice. "The biggest cooking competition?"

"Hell yeah, baby!" Eric exclaimed.

"You got accepted into Masterchef!" I repeated and repeated with my voice getting louder and louder. I threw my phone on the bed and jumped up and down with Eric.

I hugged him tightly and congratulated him.

"Can you guys stop screaming?" Jash yelled. He had to because we were too loud. We ignored him, of course. "Fine, I'm gonna go take a shower!"

Eric and I paid him no heed as he left.

"Wait, I thought you were in an MBA program?" I asked Eric when I came to my senses.

"I dropped out in my fourth semester," he said. "I hated it to the point of wanting to kill myself. Then, I auditioned for Masterchef because I love cooking."

"I never knew that!" I said disappointed.

"No one did," he assured. "We're Asian. We're supposed to be in the STEM fields not arts. Regardless, this opportunity will give me a platform to create my name and start my own restaurant."

His glassy eyes made me teary.

"I'm so happy for you!" I hugged my sweaty friend again. I quickly wiped my eyes upon returning. "Let's tell everyone else. When do you start?"
