Chapter 9: The Golden Temple

The ride to Amritsar to visit the Golden Temple was going to take between seven to eight hours. Better than we had anticipated, but we left early morning to not lose valuable time.

I managed to wake up earlier and wash my body and my hair. Hanging around with so many people and sharing space with them made me extra conscious.

Early morning in north India required thick coats and jackets like it did back home. I spotted frost on many trees and shrubs on our way. While the rest of the crew dozed off, I welcomed the peace to enjoy my view.

Good thing, I had taken the window seat in the back row. Jash was next to me separating Saloni and me. He was finally making a move.

While I watched the road, Jash's sleepy head fell on my shoulder. I wouldn't have awoken him had he not liked Saloni.

I tapped on his forearm.

He snuggled closer into my neck, his hair brushing against my skin.

I elbowed him hard and he jolted awake.

With a sleepy look, he whined, "Why'd you do that?"

Everyone else was fast asleep despite Jash's groan. I still couldn't afford them overhearing our conversation.

I quickly took out my phone, opened Notes, and typed: "Sleep on Saloni's shoulder. You'll thank me later."

I showed it to him and earned an unappreciative look. He grasped my phone out of my hands, typed up something underneath my note, and handed it back to me. He put his headrest on my shoulder and went to sleep again leaning against it.

He wasn't touching me at least.

I read his note:

I'm leaving in two days. Nothing's gonna happen. She's also drooling all over the seat. Don't force me near her.

I furiously typed up another one and tapped on his knee to wake him up to read it.

He groggily grasped my phone and squinted at the screen.

"How do you expect to win her heart if you cling on to me?" I had asked in my note.

He typed up a response and handed me the phone.

His response said: You smell good.

So much for showering in the morning.

I slapped his arm. He leaned back away from my shoulder, clasping a hand around the spot. He leaned his head back on the seat and shut his eyes.

His drowsiness made me disregard his statement. I smiled a little and told myself to keep using the lotion I used this morning.

I'm not supposed to be impressing Jash.

I snuggled into the blanket I had brought and leaned my head against the window again.

I was here to enjoy a vacation with my friends. Not here to start or resume my love life. Maybe it was time for me to enjoy my single life.

I almost laughed out loud.

Dating Rushil on and off almost felt like being single. We dated for a month, broke up, and three months later, he'd come back for a new start. For six years, we continued this toxic relationship where neither one of us was happy. I knew for sure we only did it due to the pressure from our parents.

I should've searched for other options during our breakups the way he did. At least, then I'd know whether the problem was me and my personality. Perhaps, I could fix things I was doing wrong and that could help my relationship with Rushil.
