Chapter 19: Chinese Queen of Jhansi
Rushil, Jash and his cousins had apparently seen my text and immediately rushed to find us.
I doubted they expected to find Saloni and I collapsed on the ground with blood, milk, and pistol.
"Fiza!"
"Saloni!"
My ear was ringing too hard to distinguish between the voices. I had a hand on Saloni's forehead to stop the blood flow. She had taken a harder blow from one of the men.
When Jash's face came down next to mine, I nearly collapsed in his arms.
"Jash, Saloni . . . her head . . . doctor . . . They attacked us—"
"Ssh, stand up," Jash said helping me to my feet. I stared at his face which was laced with concern as his eyes scanned my face.
"I'm not injured," I told him firmly. "Saloni has a nasty—"
His hand touched my cheek and I winced in pain.
"Jash, I think she needs stitches," Rushil said. He had helped Saloni to her feet. Jash gave him a nod and ushered us into the car.
No one listened to Saloni or me. The boys decided to drop off Monty and Lucky at home while Billu went to the hospital with us.
It took Saloni and I an hour to articulate proper thoughts about the event. Saloni's forehead was stitched and I was given painkillers for my shoulders. Thankfully, our ears were perfectly fine.
"Maybe we should do a CT scan too while we're here," Jash said once the doctor had released us.
"We're fine," Saloni said.
"Yes," I agreed with her. "Let's go back. Mano's engagement will be over by the time we return."
"The groom's family has yet to arrive," Billu said dryly. "They said they're running late."
"Wait, what happened to the milk cannister?!" I asked suddenly.
Jash, Rushil, and Billu gave me a look of disbelief.
"It saved our lives," Saloni came to my aid. "That and Fiza. Fiza, you were so brave." She jumped off her hospital bed next to mine and enveloped me into a hug. "They almost had us. Fiza somehow used her ninja skills to steal the guy's pistol and scare them off."
"Fiza probably took inspiration from Jash's grandma," Rushil said playfully.
"I did," I said and looked at Jash, who had been silent the whole time. "I want to keep the pistol as a souvenir. You guys left it in the car, right?"
Rushil nodded. "We'll figure out something to do with that later. Let's go back."
Saloni and I followed them to the car. Jash wouldn't even look at me. I was too exhausted to pry him.
We beat the groom's family to the house by ten minutes. Apparently, coming two hours late to the engagement party was considered normal.
The adults were chaotic at the turn of events. We had asked everyone to see us after the ceremony because that was more important. Still, we received hugs and apologies from every single family member. I had told them repeatedly not to blame anybody as I explained the full story. I left out the part about knowing the goons from Shimla. Technically, it was my first time meeting them.
I was glad after we were sent upstairs to relax.
I went to the bathroom to splash my face with water when I saw the real bruise. The goon leader had slapped my face hard enough to leave a handprint. Three fingers showed visibly on my right cheek.
