Chapter 20: You Have A Fever

I woke up a little later than usual. It was eight o'clock when Saloni dragged me out of bed.

"Fiza, breakfast is ready," she said. "Get up before Jash comes in and sees all your drool. Probably from all the dreams you had about him last night."

I groaned.

It was too early for her to tease me.

I dragged myself to the bathroom. I decided to wash my hair which led me into shock as the water turned red and clumps of dried blood fell on the floor. I touched the back of my head and it ached trifold.

Someone did hit my head during the fight. Maybe Jash wasn't wrong about getting a CT or MRI scan. I could wait a few days to see if I was still fine. It should scab and heal. No need to make an issue out of it. I'd keep my hair down until my head was fine.

I cleaned up and dabbed the ointment Jash had given me last night on my wounds afterwards.

Saloni waited to go downstairs with me.

In the backyard sat an older gentleman wearing a coat pant and a black turban on a cot. An obese woman sat next to him wearing heavy gold jewelry. A girl Mano's age sat with Mano on another cot. She wore heavy makeup and an olive salwar kameez that complimented her skin tone and made her brown eyes pop. Her black hair was braided up.

"Who's that?" I asked in a whisper.

Jash was sitting on Mano's other side chatting with his sister and that girl. I tried catching his eye but he was too preoccupied with the conversation.

"Kids, these are our old family friends," Jash's grandmother said. "They used to be our neighbors before moving to Delhi for business two years ago. That's Mr. & Mrs. Saini and their daughter, Keerat. She's Mano's best friend."

Ah yes, the nursing student she was trying to set Jash up with.

I had completely forgotten.

Everything in my body started hurting again.

Jash's grandma introduced us as Jash's friends and explained how we ended up staying with them.

The three of us sat down on one cot with plated of aloo paranthas. I tried not to watch Jash and Keerat.

"Fiza," Saloni leaned in whispering. "Smile. You look like you're about to kill him."

"He barely looked at us since we entered," I told her. I was glad our cot was out of earshot.

Rushil laughed, grabbing the opportunity to lean over Saloni to talk to me. He sat between us for some reason.

"He's spent the last eleven days staring at our faces," he said. "Let him enjoy."

Saloni pushed him back. "All men are the same."

Rushil facepalmed himself. "Saloni, he's allowed to talk to his friends. When we get together, you're not gonna let me talk to Fiza?"

Saloni shot him a dirty look as I grinned.

"Let's clear the misunderstanding," Saloni said seriously. "You and I will never happen."

I scoffed. "Give him a chance. You know him and vice versa. Rushil's one of the most honest guys you'll ever meet."

Rushil smiled coyly.

"Aren't you his ex?" she asked me.

"Exactly! You should believe my words." I ate my food. "We can't blame the relationship not working out on one person. I was at fault too for what happened. We've moved on."
