Chapter 28: Boyfriend

I knew I shouldn't.

But I did.

Ma had forced me into this position.

Ma was in the bathroom getting ready for the meeting probably when I entered her bedroom with my bare face. I had cleaned up and gotten ready for the meeting but I hadn't done my makeup yet.

My head was pounding after yesterday's events.

I wanted my dad to see me in this condition.

If they wanted to punish me with marriage to Rushil, I was going to get back at them too.

As usual, dad was drinking coffee and reading his daily newspaper. Just the walk up to him made something inside me break down.

"Dad," I said with tears flowing down my face. I hugged the arm holding the paper. "Dad, ma slapped me."

He set his cup down on the side table and put his newspaper down too.

"So I heard," he said barely glancing at me.

"Dad, she hit me hard!"

"My poor baby," he said as if he was treating a little kid. "Let me see. Where?"

I showed him my bruised cheek. The fake concern on his face turned real.

"She slapped me super hard. See, it bruised," I said innocently.

He lightly touched it and I winced in pain. It did hurt.

His forehead lines deepened. "Sargi! Sargi!"

My mom came out of the bathroom huffing at her name. Her makeup was half done but she had dressed up in her favorite black Gucci dress.

"What?" she asked.

I hid behind my dad like a lion's cub hides behind its parent.

"I told you last night too but you didn't listen. Look what you've done," he said and told me to show her my face.

Ma came close and her eyes widened at my cheek.

"You slapped her that hard?" Dad asked in disbelief.

"I did not," she denied immediately. "Fiza, if that's makeup, you're going to—"

She touched my bruise and when I visibly backed up at the touch, she realized I wasn't kidding.

"You slapped me and you didn't give me food. I didn't eat anything yesterday on the plane because I wanted to eat at home," I told them. "My head hurts so much."

"Who's fault is that?" Ma asked. "Tell your dad what happened. Tell him. I told her to eat and to discuss everything afterwards. She talked back to me and slapped the spoon out of my hands."

"It was an accident," I whimpered clutching my cheek.

"You didn't have to slap her," dad said. "You told me to stay out of the matter and let you deal with it. This is how you deal with it?"

"I didn't think it was that hard," she said finally in a lowered voice. I felt horrible for lying to their faces.

She sat down on the bed and pulled me close. When I didn't budge, she glared at me. I went close to her and let her inspect.

She enveloped me in a hug. "I didn't mean for this to happen. You know how I feel about anyone being disrespectful."

"I'm sorry," I told her honestly. "I swear I meant to push your hand away."
