Chapter 4: The Goons Got Guns
The house's caretaker brought us breakfast and three more heaters early morning.
Rushil, Jash, and Eric didn't look like they got much sleep. In fact, Chynna and Emma had even taken photos of Jash laying on Rushil's arm on the sofa. Eric was curled up next to the fireplace with his blanket.
Jash was getting more action than me in terms of sharing space with Rushil. Rushil and I had never crossed that far into our relationship to sleep together. I was pretty sure he never found me attractive enough to go beyond making out and touching. A classmate of mine had told me he had slept with other girls at parties but I never paid any heed to it. I had trusted him.
Rushil rose up in embarrassment when the twins yelled at the boys to wake up. Us girls were drinking hot chai and gave him a cup too. I searched his eyes for something.
I have no idea what.
Maybe I should've trusted what my heart told me whenever I looked into his eyes. He never felt the same way about me.
Then again, it was early morning.
I took my cup and excused myself to the empty garden. I studied the nature around me and calmed my heart down.
Rushil had come forward and apologized. Almost a month had passed since we broke our ties for the last and the final time.
How could I hold it against him?
It would've been worse had I found him cheating on me. In fact, he probably went out seeking other girls post breakups.
I don't know how long I stood there.
"What are you looking for?"
Jash's voice broke me out of my thoughts. He had wrapped himself up in the blanket he had slept in last night. A steaming cup of chai sat in his hands.
"What are you doing here?" I asked him.
"The twins are vlogging and I didn't want to be in their video," he explained. "What's your excuse?"
Did not wanting to see my ex's face qualify as an answer?
This trip was a terrible idea.
"I'm getting fresh air while reflecting on my choices in life," I said thoughtfully.
"The breakup was that bad?"
I met his dark eyes for a brief moment. "I invested too much in a relationship that broke a long time ago. It took me six years to realize this."
He sipped his chai. "At least, you guys figured it out. I still don't know how to get over the person I've loved for the past eight years."
I nearly dropped my empty chai cup at his words.
"You dated someone for eight years and broke up?" I asked in astonishment. I knew he dated this one girl his junior year whom he took to prom. It didn't look so serious.
He grinned. "I never dated her."
"C'mon Jash. You can smooth talk anybody," I stated. He didn't look like he believed me. "Eight years, though? How did you survive?"
He chuckled. "Attending dental school helped for sure."
"I need to know how to stop thinking about someone without attending medical school," I said a little too desperately. He ought to understand.
"How'd I know?"
"Is that why you've been nicer to me?" I asked him. "You sympathize with me for loving someone for six years?"
