Chapter 18: Get Ready to Fight

I spent an hour explaining and constructing a plan for when we returned to the company with my coworkers aka Saloni and Rushil. Both of them were shocked to hear about the data breach but we couldn't do much about it.

We had to salvage our reputations.

The house cleaning and decorating began the following day. The groom's family was coming to discuss about the expedited arrangements.

My friends and I decided to help out and get real Indian wedding experience that we'd never get anywhere else.

Saloni was hesitant at first but her project manager side came out when she started assigning roles and duties and delegated the process.

I caught Rushil staring at her in awe.

"Are you gonna make a move or not?" I nudged him.

"You and I both heard how she feels about me," he said making a lousy face.

"Help her as much as you can today," I urged. "Be there for her. Don't say anything about your feelings. You have to build a solid foundation before moving to the next base."

Jash and I did that.

Jash was busy helping put the LED lights on the house rooftop. His family kept him too busy to spend time with me. I couldn't say anything about it because he was meeting them after a long time and that too for three days.

"You know he's always liked you," Rushil said following my gaze.

"Why did you let me keep thinking he was my bully?"

He shrugged. "You asked me to tell him to stop bothering you in high school. I knew it then he had a crush. I told him to stop trying and you weren't interested."

I hit his arm with the flower basket in my hands. I was supposed to put flowers in vases.

He winced and then ran to offer Saloni a glass of water for working so hard. She ignored him and went to help Mano choose a dress for her engagement.

I turned to find good spots to put the vases and the flowers when I bumped into Jash.

"Watch where you're going, dork," Jash said catching me off guard.

I had to laugh remembering all the times he had said that to me during school time.

He winked and hurried off.

Smiling, I headed to complete my set of chores.

One of the aunts saw us working hard and brought out Rooh Afza (rose syrup infused milk) for everyone. Later, Monty opened a box of barfi (Indian sweet) and ran around the house shoving pieces in everyone's mouths.

Despite everything, I felt at peace with myself. Weddings were stressful but having so many people running around the house, chattering and working and laughing, made it more intimate.

I took a seat by Jash's grandmother and helped her peel peas for the guests coming this afternoon.

"You're a guest," she said taking the plate full of peas from me. "You shouldn't be working."

"No," I said quickly shaking my head. I took the plate and began peeling. "I'm enjoying myself. My parents don't have siblings. I've never experienced the fun of visiting relatives."

She laughed, putting her hand on my head. "You're welcome back anytime. Think of it as your home too."

She patted my head before returning to work.
