Chapter 12: Did I Ever Make You Cry?

Eric had a blast at the cooking station. He stayed there even after all of us left to watch the Punjabi folk dances.

Rushil and I wanted to go on the camel ride along with the twins. Saloni refused because she was afraid of sitting on the tall creature.

It gave Jash and her an opportunity to be alone.

Rushil however had his eyebrows drawn together. As for myself, even though I pushed Jash into Saloni, I felt a drop in my heart.

Why did it bother me now when it didn't before?

The twins rode on one camel while Rushil and I on another.

"Is this supposed to be fun?" Rushil asked as the man directing the camel led us around the open land area. "Can we go back?"

Rushil's eyes kept darting over his shoulder towards Jash and Saloni.

"Oh c'mon," I said pushing his head forward. He was seated in front of me. "Enjoy your last day with the crew. Tomorrow, it'll just be you, me, and Saloni."

"Are you having fun on this trip?" he asked slowly.

"Yes. Aren't you?" I asked taken aback.

"Hmm. Do you . . . Do I look miserable to you on our expeditions?"

I scowled at his back. "Are you depressed or something?"

"I don't know." He shrugged. "Lately, I've felt nothing but remorse for the way I've treated you. I shouldn't have kept you tied to me in a relationship that was built only to please our parents."

I felt his words pierce my heart. "You asked me out only because your parents wanted you to?"

He shook his head and looked over his shoulder.

"They introduced the idea and I genuinely enjoyed your company when we first met," he elaborated. "I wanted the relationship. The first year I spent with you was beautiful."

"Then, everything fell apart."

"You weren't into parties or drinking or going out. I was. Our tastes in music, hobbies, etc. never matched," he said a little less tense now. "Our personalities are too different to live with each other forever."

"You're right," I agreed. "I don't think I've ever seen you excited to talk to me or hear about what I had to say."

"Same for you!"

I didn't say another word as I thought about the time we spent together. We didn't have a horrible experience per se. We simply felt alone even when we were together.

"I'm sorry for giving in to my parents' pressure for so long," he said finally. "If I could go back and fix this, I would."

I let his words absorb my thoughts.

"Same, Rush. I'm so sorry," I told him sorrowful. "I let our parents intervene every single time when it came to patching up. I tried to make it work out. It was easier to do that."

Both of us let silence fall between each other. We were done forever. It didn't hurt or bother me anymore.

"Are you upset?" he asked when our ride ended.
