Chapter 31: Lap Dances
I avoided Jash's phone calls and texts.
He was going away from me for his job. If not now, he was going to break up with me later. He was a dentist and I was working in the family business. Two completely different fields.
Mom tried to talk to me about the dinner. She assumed Jash's family hated me and hence the reaction. Unfortunately, everything went well which was why I was more upset. All my happiness was swept away by Jash's words. I kept my mouth shut in front of my mother.
She decided to get Saloni involved.
Saloni met me the following morning for breakfast which was served in our room. Mom was feeling generous before she left for the Gurdwara.
"How was your date?" I asked Saloni.
"Better than expected. I heard your dinner didn't go so well," Saloni responded.
"It did," I told her. I sighed and snuggled under the covers. I had showered and brushed my teeth already but I had no appetite. I wanted to remain curled up under my covers.
"Your mom said you had a fight with Jash," she said calmly. "I have never seen that happen before."
I could trust my mother to jump to conclusions. Okay, maybe it was my fault for running away from him and not letting her open the door last night.
As Saloni was my soul sister and we told each other every single thing, I had to tell her about last night's events. She listened well and responded with her wisdom.
"You should talk to him rather than making assumptions," she told me. "What if he rejects that offer to please you? Would you feel happy then? Do you not want to see him succeed?"
"It's not that," I said feeling lost. "I don't know. What if he decides he doesn't love me anymore?"
She held my hand. "Believe me, Jash is in love with you. He finished his dental education in California and still had feelings for you. He could've easily married that one girl from his school who was also a doctor. He chose you. Besides, it's only Minnesota. You can visit him every weekend and vice versa."
She wasn't wrong and her words relieved me slightly.
Maybe I had freaked out too fast without giving him a chance to speak. He should've taken into account the time and the place to talk.
Saloni stayed with me and fed me breakfast. Before she left, she made me call Jash to meet up. She also forced me to dress a bit more "human."
Jash met me in my backyard where I sat in the patio swing bed anticipating the serious conversation.
"Hey," I said when I saw him.
"I thought you were going to ignore me like last night," he said. I flinched at his hurt tone.
"I'm sorry. I didn't know how to react," I confessed. I patted the empty spot next to me and he sat down begrudgingly.
"You ran away, Fiza."
The accusation in his tone made me wince. I placed my hand on top of his.
"I should've congratulated you. You worked hard and earned a job offer from a top clinic. We had an amazing dinner at your house . . . I still managed ruined your night, didn't I?"
The seriousness disappeared from his face.
"I should've waited to tell you," he said entwining his fingers with mine. "I couldn't keep it from you. You're the first and the only person I've told."
