Chapter 23: Girls in America
Saloni and I rushed to Rushil and Jash without wasting a second or drawing attention. Jash was busy with his grandmother and Rushil sat on a chair eating a plate full of biryani.
"Jash, can we talk to you?" I asked quickly. "It's urgent."
"What's wrong?" His grandmother beat him to it.
Saloni and I exchanged a look wondering whether or not we should tell her too. Considering we had a few days till our departure, it made no difference.
Saloni pointed in the direction of the guys seated in the farthest corner of the area. Jash's face blinked in recognition.
"They're the ones who attacked us," I told the elderly woman.
Jash started to go but she grabbed his hand.
"Come with me, Jashan," she told him. "You two enjoy the food and the ceremony."
Saloni and I waited in confusion as those two went to Jash's uncles. Rushil was also brought to the group along with Jash's cousins. Before we knew it, everyone disappeared.
All the men in Jash's family went to our attackers and took them out of the tent. It was thirty minutes later when Jash and Rushil joined us again with sweaty faces.
"What happened?" Saloni asked before I could.
"Let's just say we took care of it," Jash said quietly. I raised an eyebrow. "They won't be messing with anyone again anytime soon."
"Did you beat them up?" I asked. I didn't see any signs of it.
Rushil and Jash exchanged a smirk before shrugging.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked irritated by their mysterious actions.
"C'mon, let's eat ice cream," Jash said taking my arm. "No need to worry about unnecessary drama."
All of us received single scoops of vanilla ice creams in plastic bowls. Rushil went through five or six scoops before calling it quits. We passed by the pani puri stall when Rushil made a gagging sound.
"I think I'm going to be sick." He ran towards the bathroom.
Saloni sighed and excused herself to offer him tissues and a painkiller. After she left, I turned to Jash.
"I haven't forgiven you for sabotaging my pani puri game with tapeworms," I said feigning an angry look.
"You're going to be mad even after I got rid of the bad guys for you?" he asked leaning in. "I know the solution though."
He went to the dessert stall and brought back something familiar. I eyed him and then the sweets in his hand. I had to crack a smile.
The butterflies in my stomach went insane and I felt my cheeks warm up at last night's events.
I took the rasgullas bowl from him.
"The only reason I'm taking these from you is because I loved these yesterday," I told him so he didn't think he was forgiven this easily.
"Just these?" he asked, his lips fighting back a smile.
I kept my eyes on my food wondering why it was hot in the middle of winter. Jash made me feel emotions I had long forgotten despite being in a relationship for six years.
I was saved by Keerat running over to us.
"Why are you guys here?" she asked as if it were a crime. "C'mon, all the aunties are waiting to matchmake you with their kids."
