Rebecca sat in a giant conference room next to her lawyer. She felt Colby's eyes staring a hole through her and she looked over at him.
There he sat, the suit jacket he once had one was now abandoned on the back of the chair.. he sat there absentmindedly chewing on the end of the pen in his hand as he listened to the lawyers discuss with one another.
"He has no rights" Rebecca stated
"He actually has more rights than you understand" Colby's lawyer, Mike stated
"If she's uncomfortable with him being the adoptive parent she doesn't have to sign anything" Rebecca's lawyer, Carlos spoke up
"If she chooses to go with another family Mr.Lopez can legally block the adoption"
"I don't understand how.. I'm the one carrying the baby.. how can he have rights?"
"I helped create the baby" Colby spoke up now and Rebecca looked over at him "So the way I look at it, you can sign the paperwork and finalize the adoption or we can drag this out in court which I will win" he shrugged
The room was silent, they were in a stare down and the lawyers were conversing with one another once again.
"I don't understand why you're making this so difficult" Colby shook his head "You clearly don't want the kid.. just sign over your rights"
"I don't want the baby?" Rebecca questioned with a laugh "I don't want the baby" she repeated with a nod "That is the furthest thing from the truth" she shook her head "I want this baby but I can't have this baby" she shook her head "I can barely take care of myself.. I can barely pay my rent and I'm going to school on a full scholarship which is the only way I'd be able to even think about this school" she explained and he nodded "some of us weren't born rich like others"
"Okay.. so you're not set up financially.. most families aren't.. wouldn't you want to know your child is in a family that can fully take care of them? A family that will protect them, that will give them anything and everything that they could ever want? They would go to the best schools, the best everything"
Her face softened, he had a point.. she was doing this to insure her child was fully taken care of like she couldn't do.
"Colby" she heard an unfamiliar voice and looked over to see a semi-grey haired man walk in the door on a cane
"Dad" Colby said and Rebecca's eyes winded, this was Ron.. the CEO of the company
"Are you in here giving this poor girl trouble?" Ron questioned as he walked slowly over to the head of the conference table and took a seat in the rolling chair
"He's making my life hell" Rebecca said as she now looked at Ron who laughed at her
"He tends to do that" the elder gentleman nodded
"No offense.." Rebecca shook her head "but how are you more enjoyable than your son?" She asked
"Rebecca is it?" Ron questioned and she nodded "Well you see Rebecca, I am 70 years old.. I am in the final stages of pancreatic cancer with no cure in sight" he explained and Rebecca felt herself become emotional "With that being said, I have seen a lot in my life.. I have worked for a lot in my life, my son however.. hasn't had to work for a thing a day in his life"
"So he is entitled to everything" Rebecca looked over at Colby with a glare
"Very much so" Ron nodded
"I'm sitting right here!" Colby exclaimed with his arms in the air
"This conversation doesn't involve you" Ron said and Rebecca noticed how quickly Colby became silent and his hands were back in his lap "Back to us" he turned his attention back to Rebecca "I understand how important family is.. this company depends on family.. it depends on its next generation to thrive.. my son, unfortunately is the next generation" he looked over at Colby and Rebecca's eyes winded and she watched Colby nod "As the so called Heir to the company it is his responsibility to secure the next generation and it is his responsibility to secure a positive family image in the eyes of the public" he continued to explain and that confused Rebecca even more now "So have you two decided when the wedding is going to be? Hopefully sooner rather than later so I can be there for the photos" he said
"Excuse me?" Rebecca spoke for the first time now "Wedding? What wedding?" She asked
"We haven't got to that topic yet" Colby said
