Colby walked into the kitchen the next morning to find Rebecca sitting at the counter eating toast. He stared at her for a moment just admiring her before he made his presence known.
He walked over to the coffee maker as he smiled at her with a shake of his head
"What?" She asked as she watched him grab a mug from the cabinet
"Nothing" he shook his head "Just admiring the view"
"It's raining" she said looking out the giant windows and he shook his head once more
"I've got quite the beautiful view inside the house.. it makes the weather outside just fade away"
"Smooth" she nodded with a smirk
It was quiet in the house, Maria was gone for the weekend since Rebecca was home and agreed to cook, Kent was out doing his rounds for the morning and Colby and Rebecca were supposed to be getting ready for the day.
"Are you ready for today?" He asked as he moved to lean against the cabinet
"No" she shook her head "I don't want to do it"
"You have to go identify him in a line up.. that's all you have to do"
"I don't understand how me identifying him helps anything.." She shook her head "You already beat it out of him.. what does my statement and identification matter?"
"The lawyers say the confession I got out of him wasn't technically credible to use in court because I was literally beating him up so he could have said anything to get me to stop.. say whatever he wanted me to hear"
"Why can't you just go give a statement?"
"Because you were the one he did it to the police need your recount of the night" he said and she sighed "You'll be fine.. I'll be right there next to you" he said and she nodded
A few hours later, as they walked into the police station, Rebecca felt more uneasy with each step she took.
She knew she had to do this, she just had to give her statement to the officer and then they could get out of here.
"I'm right out here" Colby said as he stood outside the door of the one of the interrogation rooms, they wouldn't allow him to come in the room because they didn't want him to influence Rebecca's story one way or another "Just tell them the truth" he said and she nodded and he leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on her lips before she disappeared in the room.
Colby walked around the same hallway for what felt like hours while he waited for Rebecca. Kent watched him pacing back and forth multiple times.
"You're going to owe them a new floor if you keep pacing like that" Kent spoke up from his spot as he leaned against the wall
"How long does it take to tell a two minute story?" Colby looked at him
"They're probably talking to her about the whole night not just Brandon handing her a drink"
"I don't like that she's in there alone" he shook his head and Kent laughed "What?" Colby asked
"You" Kent smirked "you are in so much trouble with this one aren't you?" He asked and Colby stared at him for a moment
"What do you mean?"
"I have never seen you look at any woman the way you look at the woman in that room" he pointed to the door "I have never seen you be as vulnerable as you are when she is around.. you never let any woman stay over at the house longer than a few hours, you never let someone other than Maria cook for you.. you are home a lot more than you've ever been"
"So I'm developing a home life and you think it has anything to do with Rebecca?" He asked and Kent stared at him silently
"You're in love with her"
"It's been a month.." Colby shook his head "and We're not even together"
"You're not together?" Kent laughed "Your definition of that and everyone else's must be completely different"
The door opened and the officer walked out first with a small smile and nod and Rebecca followed him with tears in her eyes and she made her way straight to Colby's arms and he wrapped them around her protectively as he held her against his chest.
"You love her" Kent mouthed
"Shut.Up." Colby mouthed back and the elder gentleman laughed silently
The next step and final step before they could go home was the line up. Rebecca had to try her best to identify Brandon from a line up of other men that were all dressed the same way as Brandon was on the night.
"Now remember.." The lawyer stated "You can see all of them but they cannot see you" they explained and Rebecca nodded
The line of 8 men walked into the room, holding numbers in front of them and Rebecca stepped forward to look at each one and Colby's eyes immediately landed on Brandon who had a smug look on his face.
Colby averted his eyes to keep Rebecca from seeing which one he was staring at. She stood next to the lawyers for a few seconds before Colby noticed her entire demeanor shift.
She began to breathe heavily and her hands started to shake slightly. She had spotted him and Colby knew that.
"Number 4" she said in a whisper and the lawyers nodded and so did the other two officers that were in the room "Number 4" she said again
Rebecca backed away from the window and into Colby's chest, she could hear her heartbeat in her ears.
"Hey.. its okay" Colby ran his arms over her arms "Its okay" he said kissing her head and she shook hers
"Its not" she shook her head as she turned to face him with tears falling from her eyes
"It is.. you did it, you identified him.. we can go home now" he said
"I dated him" she said quickly and Colby's jaw dropped
"What?" He asked "When?"
"A few months ago.. he was in my sociology class and we were partners in a project.. I dated him"
Colby stared at Rebecca without any expression on his face as he tried to process that information. He was in shock, she was in tears and a million and one thoughts ran through his head.
Kent leaned over from his spot next to Colby and whispered something in his ear that caused chills to run down his spine.
"How long has he been stalking her?"
