"I don't even understand how you got pregnant in the first place" Colby shook his head as he watched Rebecca run her hand through her hair.
"Well, dear, when a Mommy loves a daddy.." She started
"I know that part!" He stopped her quickly, "but I don't understand how this is even possible in the first place because you have an IUD."
"I took it out," she said in a whisper
"What?" He asked in disbelief. "You did what?"
"I had my IUD taken out" she nodded
"When?" He asked through gritted teeth
"A few months ago," she said
"You had your birth control removed.. months ago.. and you didn't tell me" he shook his head. "You took every precaution we had away from us."
"Don't try blaming this on me.." She shook her head. "You were the one talking about wanting to start trying to have another baby."
"I did," he nodded. "I did talk about wanting another baby, but I didn't think we were there yet. Yes, We had talked about it, but I wasn't thinking you were going to pull all protection away."
"I was going to tell you that night.. before our entire lives blew up in our faces."
"Now, look at us!" He yelled as he threw his hands in the air, "We're the worst we've ever been.. we are getting divorced, we can't even Co-Parent one kid.. and now you're going to throw Trevor's kid into the mix."
"It's not Trevor's" she shook her head, and he stopped talking and just stared at her. "It's not"
"How is it not? You and I haven't had sex in over a month now," he said, and she rolled her eyes.
"It's not his," she stated
"Do you expect me to believe that?" He asked as he folded his arms across his chest. "This is hard enough of both of us, don't even get my hopes up" he shook his head. "You know how badly I wanted another kid.. don't even mess with me like that."
"I'm telling you the truth" she nodded. "I know in the web of lies that we've both been spinning for the last few weeks that it isn't going to be easy to believe, but I swear to you it's not Trevor's, Trevor and I never even slept in the same bed together much less had sex" she shook her head.
"I don't believe you," he said with a shake of his head
"Do you want me to call Trevor and have him tell you?"
"He's just gonna lie for you like he's been doing this whole time, so what good is that going to do?"
"Oh my god!" She yelled as she ran her hands over her face, "Do you want me to get a paternity test?"
"You can't do that until the baby is born" he shook his head
"Yes, I can.." She nodded. "It's called an amniocentesis."
"How the fuck do you know that?"
"Because I was researching.."
"Why were you researching? If you're so sure it's mine, why were you trying to find out if there was a way to get a DNA test done?"
"Because, you idiot!" She yelled, "I knew you wouldn't believe me" she took a deep breath. "I can get it done when I'm fifteen weeks. They insert a needle, take some fluid and compare it to your DNA sample," she stated, "It's simple. I have to take it easy after to make sure nothing happens."
"Make sure nothing happens.." He shook his head. "You doing this test could make you lose the baby."
"It's a possibility but not common usually."
"No," he shook his head
"Why not? If you want the answer so badly."
"Because I'm not letting you risk a baby's life.. whether it's mine or not, You are not doing it, and that's final."
"So what is your plan, smartypants? Because you're not going to believe me until you know the answer for yourself."
She watched him grab his phone from the counter, and he looked up at her and back to his phone.
"What are you doing?" She walked over to him and saw he was on an app. "Why do you have a period tracker on your phone?" She asked
"How else do you think I knew to be extra good to you and bring you chocolates and flowers home every month?" He asked with a smug smile on his face, and she rolled her eyes
"When was the last time we even had sex?" She asked
"Seven or eight weeks ago," he said, and she stared at him. "What?"
"How.." She started but then shook her head. She wasn't even going to ask
Rebecca quickly grabbed the phone from his hand, and he watched her fingers begin to type.
He heard ringing, which only indicated she was calling someone.
She watched her as she talked to a receptionist, and he stared at her, confused.
"What are you doing?" He asked
"I'm calling my doctor.." She said as she put the phone on speaker
"Mrs. Lopez," the doctor, greeted her with a warm welcome
"Hi, Doctor Chaney," Rebecca smiled, and Colby rolled his eyes. His wife knew how to turn on the charm and be fake when she needed to be. "I was just at the doctor's with CJ this morning and was wondering if he sent over the lab results he received for me."
"He did," Doctor Chaney stated. "I was just going over them and about to call you myself."
"He did say that the pregnancy test came back positive," the redhead stated
"It is positive, and we had it double-checked on our end to be 100% sure, and you are pregnant.. congratulations!" She exclaimed
"Thank you. I have one question before I come in for an ultrasound.. you can see the hormone levels on the paperwork.. can you tell me about how far along I would be based on that?"
"Well, as you know, we won't know for certain how far along in the pregnancy you are until we schedule you for an ultrasound and measure the baby but based on these hormone levels right now, I'd say you'd be anywhere between 7 and 8 weeks along," she said. Rebecca looked over at Colby with the look of I told you so all over her face.
"Thank you so much, and I'll be in touch with your receptionist to schedule an appointment," she said
"Sounds good. Congratulations once again," Doctor Chaney said as she hung up the phone, and Rebecca placed Colby's phone on the counter.
"I told you so," she said
