Adrian grinned inwardly thinking that maybe he would push his look just a little bit farther. Evelin sat up when it was down to less than a minute. The gym roared as the students who were staying the night counted down to the New Year. Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six, Five, Four, Three, Two, One! The Ball had dropped and lights pronounced that one year had ended and another had just begun.
Then the gym went wild, students hugged, kissed, and screamed. Adrian watched Evelin who was cheering and then watched the screen and the happy people ecstatic even though there weather probably made them human ice cubes. Adrian took advantage of Evelin's distraction and leaned forward and kissed her ever so gently. She kissed him back and relished the feel of his lips on hers.
He was her first kiss, Evelin had never seriously dated. She'd been on group dates dates, no physical contact had ever been involved. Really she liked her personal space, thats why irritated so much when Adrian latched onto her arms. Now that it was officially the New Year adults were clearing out the cafeteria would soon enough be taken over by the teenagers who weren't asleep yet. Evelin poured herself a glass of sparkling grape juice and sat down with a donut. This must have gotten a different kind this year this one was less sweet and a little more sour. Evelin liked it better than the other kind she decided to pour herself another glass and start to flip though a left behind Seattle Times. Three glasses later Evelin felt dizzy and slightly nauseous. She passed out, ill from the liquor combination that was used to spike the grape juice.
Evelin came too with the starting of horrible headache. No wonder the sparkling grape juice had tasted so different it was spiked with something. She got up to try to walk back to the gym and stumbled and fell over.
Adrian had gotten up to get himself something to snack on sick of watching the movie that was playing now in the gym. He gotten in to the cafeteria just in time to watch Evelin fall to the ground, she didn't get up. He was there in an instant. Her could smell the alcohol on her breath when she sat up. He got up and went and got her a bottle of water and poured himself a cup of grape juice.
“You don't want to drink that.” Evelin said drunkenly gesturing at his drink.
Adrian smelled the clear sparkling liquid“its spiked. Is that how you got yourself hammered? How many did you drink?”
Evelin nodded “five.” Stupid girl, Adrian thought she must have been chugging them. Adrian thought a little shot of of alcohol might do him some good, he downed the juice in a single gulp. He knew he'd be fine one drink at his size wouldn't hurt. Evelin's problem was that she had no alcohol tolerance and had drunk five of them.
He helped her stumble into her sleeping bag. She fell asleep almost instantly. Adrian got into his own sleeping bag. The gym had quieted down, Adrian wasn't quiet tired yet. He look at the gym, covered with banners for the years the Willowcreek Mountain Lions had won there league. The basketball team had even gone to States one year. Eventually he found himself just watching Evelin sleep. She breathed quietly in and out of her mouth. Her brown hair was partially fanned out on her pillow. He was day dreaming about swimming in a pool of tropically clear blue water when Evelin ruled closer to him so the lengths of there bodies were touching. Her hands were onto of the sleeping bag he reached over and held on of them still asleep Evelin gripped his hand tighter. Adrian drifted off like that with Evelin right next to him the there hands linked.
