Drake's eyes open. The bright early morning sun almost blinds him.
He looks down.
It takes a moment for his eyesight to adjust.
The tightly packed grass under his feet shimmer against the all too bright light surrounding him.
Drake then looks before him.
That same light bathes a curved concrete road.
He finds himself standing by its bend.
There's a soft calming humming about the place.
He looks around.
The light breeze blowing through the bamboo grove across the road rustles their thick overlapping foliage.
The place seems familiar to him.
He turns his head to the right. He then sees teenage boy about twenty yards from him.
The Teenage Boy is kneeling beside his bike, checking its rear wheel.
Drake slowly makes his way to where the Teenage Boy is with his bike.
For a sunny and bright morning, there's a certain cool feeling that descends upon his face.
Drake: Excuse me po.
He calls the attention of the Teenage Boy.
The Teenage Boy looks up. Drake notices his gentle face and glassy eyes in the golden light.
Drake: Hey! May dumadaan po bang trike or bus here pa-Bayan?
The Teenage Boy furls his eyebrows.
Teenage Boy: Ano po yaong trike?
He asks.
Drake: Sasakyan po. Public transportation?
Drake quickly explains.
The Teenage Boy is slightly confused. He lifts the bike slightly off the ground and turns the rear wheel.
Drake: Uhhmmm, it's a motorcycle na may naka-attach na passenger thing.
The Teenage Boy scratches his head, exhales, gives up on the busted rear bicycle wheel, and stands up.
Teenage Boy: Walang atang gay-on dito.
The Teenage Boy smiles at him.
Teenage Boy: Saan ka po ba papunta?
He asks Drake.
Drake: Sa bayan po. Sa San Angel?
Drake pauses.
It's the first time since he opened his eyes that he realizes where he is.
Teenage Boy: Walang masyadong nadaang sasakyan dito maliban na lang sa mga truck na galing sa Hacienda Santa Ines.
The Teenage Boy explains to him.
Drake: Siguro I'll just walk.
He tells himself.
Drake: Going to the bayan ba— is— is it that far?
The Teenage Boy gives him a rather perplexed look.
Teenage Boy: Sa America ka ba nag-aral o lumaki?
He asks Drake.
Teenage Boy: Ang English mo kasi, medyo kakaiba —mukha ka namang Hapon.
Drake chuckles awkwardly.
