Chapter Thirty-Nine: The Night Smiles for the Young

Drake: Someone's obviously hungry.

Drake comments as Migz almost gobbles up his food. They are seated at the end of the large dining table of the comedor near its arched entrance. Migz had not eaten a bite since breakfast.

Migz: Oo naaa...

He says to Drake with his mouth full.

With all the things that happened earlier that day: Drake's episode in Matthew's old room at Doña Mirza's house, the last night of the novena for Inang, and the Santacruzan procession, Migz had forgotten to eat despite Drake asking him to join him in the kitchen earlier that afternoon.

Drake: Eh ba't kasi you didn't eat muna kanina bago ka sumunod sa Plaza?

Drake asks.

Migz: Kulang na sa oras.

He says to him before taking another spoonful of rice.

He raises his eyebrows twice at Drake while chewing.

Drake takes a sip of his juice.

Drake: Don't be too obvious, Migz.

He is not a bit amused with Migz's unusually clingy behaviour earlier.

Migz: Don't resist, Drake.

He winks and smiles.

Drake: Eat your Morcon!

The sound of small sky rockets exploding in the sky is heard.

"Nariyan na ang Sagala!"

Shouts someone from the sala mayor.

Migz: Saan na po, kuya?

Migz asks aloud.

"Yung mga guia pa lang ng patrol ang kita. Pa-liko pa lang siguro ng Calle Real."

He informs Migz.

Migz: Titigil pa mga 'yon sa bahay ni Abu Mirza para mag-pugay sa imagen ng Santa Ines na naka-dungaw.

Migz rises from his seat.

Migz: Ate Bibang! Ate Bibang!

He calls on her.

She emerges from the door leading to the kitchen still wearing his apron.

Ate Bibang: Oh, ano iyon, Migz?

She asks as Migz takes his drink.

Migz: Nandiyan na daw sa may Calle Real ang mga Sagala.

He informs her.

Ate Bibang: Sige, susunod ako.

Migz: Let's go, Drake.

He takes Drake by the hand.

Drake: You haven't finished your food.

Drake resists a bit.

Migz: Para makunan mo ng pictures yung mga Sagala habang na-liko sa tapat ng mga old houses.

Migz and Drake run down the stone steps of Casa de Arrastia. Stepping out of the open gates to the sidewalk where the guests have gathered  to watch the Santacruzan, Drake could not help but feel astounded by the sight: old houses with their windows slid open showing off their bright chandeliers, lit candles on windowpanes and by the gates accompanying religious icons, and almost everything stopping for this moment when the Santacruzan is to pass by.
