Chapter Forty Two: May End Morning

Drake's eyes slowly open.

The sky outside is of a greyish tinge as what remains of the clouds from last night's heavy downpour still cover the town of San Angel. The sun's usual harbinger is struggling against this grey sky as the night seems intent to stay a while longer, and the cold spell cast by last night's rain asks the sleepers to stay in their beds a little longer.

Drake shifts to his left.

He feels something is amiss.

Someone is not beside him.

He remembers drifting to sleep being held close by Migz, his head resting on his arm as the sound of the raindrops hitting the roof had lulled them to sleep.

He lifts his head a bit and squints his eyes to see if Migz is still there. Drake remembers that Migz had intended to occasionally check on the florists working overnight on the carroza. He may have gone out to see the progress.

Drake closes his eyes once again and tries to catch a few more minutes of sleep.

Ate Bibang: Migz, ang aga mo naman 'ata!

She says to Migz upon entering the kitchen.

Migz: Good morning, Ate Bibang!

He greets her as she approaches the kitchen island where Migz is placing the marinated chicken thigh fillets over a bed of ginger, garlic, and cut spring onions.

Ate Bibang: Good morning din sa 'yo.

She grabs her apron from the hook on the wall and wears it.

Migz: Ah, na-isipan ko kasi na mag-luto ng breakfast natin.

Migz explains to her as he places the last piece of chicken onto the steaming dish.

Ate Bibang: Ano ba 'yang niluluto mo?

She asks while pouring herself some brewed coffee from the coffee maker.

Migz: Steamed egg, Kim-chi Fried rice, ginger chicken in light soy sauce, saka i-grill ko yung tapa natin in-adjust lang yung timpla.

He points to the prep work he has done for some dishes as he enumerates the menu.

Ate Bibang: Parang ang dami mo nang na-gawa! Kanina ka pa?

She asks while taking a closer look at the chicken thigh fillets Migz had arranged for steaming.

Migz: Bumaba po ako kanina mga 5:00am para silipin si Inang at ang gayak ng carroza.

He says while taking the steaming dish to the large steamer.

Ate Bibang: Ah kumusta naman sila doon?

Ate Bibang asks before taking a sip of her coffee.

Migz: Na-idlip sina Bubbles nung bumaba ako pero mukhang finished na po sila sa gayak ng carroza.

He informs her as he places the prepared chicken thigh fillet on the top layer of the steamer after pouring a prepared soy sauce mixture over it.

Ate Bibang: Mamaya ko na sisilipin. Nasaan na ba sina Esther at Ruth?

Drake makes a left turn towards the pillared arched entrance of the Comedor and finds Don Vicente seated at the head of the huge wooden dining table reading the morning paper while Ate Bibang is laying down the silver tray to serve coffee.
