Doña Mirza: Ito na yata ang unang pagka-kataon na may nakapag-kuha ng video habang kami ay nag-aalay ng mga ex votos ng Inang.

She says before sipping her tea.

Drake: Talaga po?

He takes a bite of his Sansrival.

Doña Mirza: Vicente must be really fond of you, Drake.

She smiles.

Doña Mirza: I grow fond of you every minute.

Drake blushes.

He sets down the dessert plate on the corner table.

Drake: Siguro po, if ever God could make me choose my lola, kayo po ang pipiliin ko.

He smiles back Doña Mirza.

Doña Mirza: Hindi nga lang ako pinalad na maka-pangasawa.

She tells him matter of factly.

Drake: You never married po?

All this time, it never occured to Drake that Doña Mirza was a spinster.

Doña Mirza: Hindi mo ba alam? Miguel never told you?

She is surprised that even after the interview, Drake never figured it out.

Drake: Hindi po niya nasabi.

Doña Mirza: I was busy helping my sister raise her children. Kami na lang kasing mga babae ang natira matapos mawala sa 'min si Matthew noong guerra.

Drake hears the name again. For a brief moment, just before he fainted in front of the mesa altar earlier this afternoon, Doña Mirza heard her say that he reminds her of Matthew.

Drake: You mentioned that name po kanina. You said I remind you of Matthew po?

Doña Mirza sighs...

Doña Mirza: Matthew was our only brother. He died during the war.

A small truck arrives under the cover of darkness in front of Casa Alvize de Arrastia. Basyong, the encargado of Familia Delgado, opens the gate to let the truck in.

All the lamps from inside the house have been dimmed. Matthew, age 17, and his sister Mirza, age 11, watch from the open window above facing Calle Real as a woman and a teenage boy alight from the back of the truck they just rode, obscured by the cargo of jute sacks and piled up wooden chests as the truck made its through the night.

Diday:
Señora andito na po sila.

The maid whispers to Doña Celeste who is kneeling in prayer before the image of Santa Ines, illuminated by an almost spent white candle. She makes the sign of the cross, rises from the kneeler, and makes her way to the top of the staircase.
