"You know, when I spoke to you on the phone yesterday, and I told you to catch the son-of-a-bitch, I didn't mean to take down our entire source of income..." Carter joked as she approached Steve near the gravestone.
Happy had driven her to the location, hesitantly dropping her off at the strange cemetery where Steve wanted to pick her up.
Natasha chuckled, and Carter turned to her.
"You're not off the hook either, I was hounded by leeches with cameras outside of Avengers Tower and it's your fault!" She joked, pointing a finger aggressively in the widow's direction.
The girl wasn't exaggerating either, she wore the attached hood on her black kids' leather jacket pulled up to cover her face. She hated the new attention that the release of the S.H.I.E.L.D. files had so graciously gifted her. She hated that now, everyone knew who the little girl who'd been living with Steve Rogers really was.
What she was.
Before, she had been somewhat anonymous. She hadn't really been out in public during the Battle Of New York, and since then she'd spent most of her time either at their apartment or at the Tower.
But now even her bleak and miniscule hopes of any sort of normal life were over. Everyone knew who she was and what she could do- what she had done. Steve being her gardian, and her training with the Avengers was the only explainable reason she hadn't been arrested and sent to juvie yet.
She eyed the folder in Steve's hand, but decided not to ask about it. Not yet.
"Will you do me a favor?" Natasha asked, making eye contact with Steve, "Call that nurse." She finished.
Steve smiled slightly, "She's not a nurse," He joked.
"And you're not a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent," Natasha glanced down to Carter, cometmplating for a moment before adding, "Neither are you,"
Carter wasn't sure if it was the look in her eye, or the look on her face that said it, but she knew what the woman meant.
Everyone knew S.H.I.E.L.D. academy had always been her plan. She didn't need school, or college, and she wasn't interested in any mediocre day-to-day jobs.
But now, that plan had just crashed into the Potomac and left her stranded without any idea of who she was supposed to become.
A soldier, like Steve?
A spy, like Natasha?
A scientist, like Bruce?
An engineer, like Tony?
Or a would she become a mixture of all of them.
The thing that had brought them all together.
Combining their individual talents to protect the country- sometimes the world.
Would she become an Avenger?
YAY END OF WINTER SOLDIER HAS COMEEEEE! I'm living for Carter, and I can't freakin wait for the next time you see her B)
I decided a double update was deserved after so long and with such a short chapter, so here you go! By the time this is out I've started (*cough* finished *cough*) the next chapter!
Sorry I had to skip most of this movie, but I think it's more accurate to how Steve/the Avengers would handle a child. I love most fanfics, but it's always bothered me that literal children are fighting with the Avengers.
Like, CPS guys, c'mon...
As always, if you like this chapter feel free to vote, and I'd love to hear any feedback in the comment section. If you're enjoying the story and you have a friend, or a family member, or a dog with a Wattpad account that you think would like it share it with them!
So greatful for 5k reads! Thanks for supporting this story folks!
Sincerely,
C.B.K.
