Her blonde hair rested over the pillow in strands. The smallest sticking to her flushed and sweating face. Her eyes were closed, unforgiving to the medical team who yearned to spot the blue of her father's eyes.
At least, that was the rumor going around.
S.H.E.I.L.D. was sent into a frenzy when Agent Coulson returned with Tony Stark, Pepper Potts, and someone they were claiming was a genetic replica of Captain America.
These details, of course, were classified.
But rumors only grow.
The speculation among the staff all had the same theme to them. They knew that she was connected to the man, and the possibilities are somewhat few and far between.
She's his long lost daughter, also frozen in ice.
She's his long lost granddaughter, being targeted by Hydra.
She's his bastard child that was born and grew exponentially over the last few weeks due to the serum.
...that last one is particularly outlandish...
But the few who were allowed to know the details found the truth hard to believe. Hydra was alive and well, and they had bred and raised a biological super-soldier.
The information buzzed through the halls, but in her medical room, the only sound was her rhythmic breathing and the steady tone of the heart monitor.
It was a plain room, white walls paired with linoleum flooring. A large mirror built into the wall, and on the other side of the one-way glass stood Nicholas Fury.
His dark skin was complimented by his black attire, leather eyepatch matching his leather trenchcoat admirably.
The door to his right opened to reveal a redhead, who immediately moved to Fury's side. She stood beside him, watching the sleeping child.
"This is her?" She broke the silence, her voice even and unforthcoming.
"Yep," was Fury's only response. They stood there for a few minutes, both unsure of what could be said. The woman spoke again.
"The medical team backed it up? DNA, hair samples-"
"Everything," Fury reporting, cutting off her doubts, "And it's all a match. A few are calling it a scientific miracle," he finished with a tone that portrayed he disagreed with his words.
"What do you think, Director?" She questioned, picking up on his skepticism.
"I think that there are too many questions that need answering for me to be comfortable with this," he paused, glancing at the woman beside him, "If she told Stark the truth, and she came from where she came from, she could be a lot like you Agent Romanoff," he finished, gauging her reaction.
She didn't give him one.
"What do you mean by that Director? Abnormal...dangerous..." she turned to look him in the eye, for he was still watching her,"...deadly?" Her eyes dared him to confirm her thoughts.
He sighed, contemplating his words.
"Lost," he said finally. He then took one last look at the girl and left the room.
Natasha Romanoff stood alone, watching the girl. She agreed with Fury's words. She might as well be on the mirror side of the glass because suddenly that was all she saw.
A younger version of herself.
She was all the things that she had listed off, and more. She was scared because she had to be. Brave, because she had to be. Dangerous, because she had to be.
