[Picture of Avery Phillips- aka. Carter's face lol, her eyes changed since the photo from the beginning, but Carter's are still blue/green]
Carter had celebrated her tenth "birthday" with Steve, a few months after S.H.E.I.L.D. collapsed.
They'd had a quiet dinner in one of the small diners in New York, complete with a celebratory milkshake and waffles for dinner (Carter can say with absolute certainty, that waffles are and always will be better than pancakes).
Steve had bought a single piece of cake from the grocery store, and she had laughed genuinely as he struggled to put ten candles on it.
She'd blown them out without making a wish.
Tony had video chatted her earleir in the day, to wish her a happy birthday and insist she visit the Tower to get her present sometime soon- which was later revealed to be a laptop and tablet set, the latest StarkTech that hadn't hit the market yet.
She'd received a card in the mail from Bruce and Clint, the latter strangely having no return address.
Natasha had sent her a key, to a P.O. box, which held a present. They'd gone to pick it up days ago, both rolling their eyes at her antics, but She'd waited to open it until the morning of her actual birthday- as silly as she told herself it was, it felt...almost special.
The Box had held a plain, simple necklace, and a burner phone with one number on it.
The gold necklace held a small charm in the shape of a bird-
Carter had let out a small gasp when she saw it.
It was a Phoenix.
As she breathed through the panic trying to rise within her, the note caught her eye.
You are not what they made you to be...
The words echoed through her mind over and over again, and she stared at the small spider doodled at the end.
Her head filled with the familiar memories...
But instead of panic filling her, consuming her...
There was Fury.
She was furious, murderous at her creators.
They'd tried to build her into an all-knowing, unbeatable, trustable soldier.
They'd shown her the world, and spat on the things that made it beautiful.
Things like emotion.
They'd blocked her from feeling, tried to stifle any morality she could've had.
But they had failed.
They'd wanted her to be their Phoenix...
But she would be her own.
They had hidden inside the organization she ran to for help.
And that was the day she decided that from the ashes of her creator and her savior...
She would rise.
Not for H.Y.D.R.A.
Not for S.H.I.E.L.D.
She would rise for herself.
She would not take on the name, but she would know...
From that day on, she wore that necklace, tucked safely under her shirt. She carried the burner phone wherever she went, the number remaining nameless.
She spent the next six months learning, always learning. Her and Steve had moved into Avengers Tower full time, Maria Hill coming to work for Tony and the Avengers after the collapse of S.H.I.E.L.D..
