It was the king's son that she felt the most. It wasn't the panic or fear that filled the rest of the room.
It was his grief that overwhelmed her. The way it volleyed between anger and sorrow until it blended together into something so suffocating, so all-consuming she almost couldn't stand it.
"Carter, are you alright?" Nat asked from beside her, quickly following her gaze.
She froze at the scene as well, frowning sadly.
"Come on, we have to move," She urged.
EMTs and firefighters were already rushing up the stairways and trying to get to people. Carter saw many pinned under tables, unconscious on the floor, some unable to move because of how much pain they were in.
"Nat..." She started, "...am I allowed to help?" She asked, looking to the widow for guidance.
Natasha pursed her lips, searching the room. She moved towards the group of emergency responders, finding an officer. She approached him, asking a question. He spoke into his radio, and after a few moments of waiting, he nodded.
With a look from Nat, Carter jumped into action.
She summoned her abilities and slowly, and carefully amber energy lifted the desks and debris off of their victims. It took people a few moments to realize what was happening, but when they did they seemed to accept it fairly easily. The firefighters rushed to each individual she freed, and more were on standby for the next.
When she couldn't find any others, Carter turned to the new King, finding him still on the ground, his father's body gone- most likely taken by the EMTs.
"Your Highness..." She called softly, approaching him.
He met her gaze and shook his head, "I am aware of your particular skillset, Miss Rogers, but I do not need it," He said, finally standing and letting himself be led out.
With a heavy sigh, Carter went to look for anyone she could help. She found an EMT trying to stop the bleeding on a woman's torso, she was crying out in pain, but they weren't going anywhere.
"Please, I- I can't move..." She beathed, begging the man to help her.
"Ma'am," The girl said, gaining their attention as she knelt on the ground beside her, "My name is Carter, this man needs to work before they can get you to a hospital, but it'll be okay. I can take away the pain for a little bit, is that okay with you?" She asked calmly, reaching for the woman's hand.
She woman frowned, "Can you really?" she gasped out, blood leaking from her mouth.
Carter simply nodded, and let the woman place her hand in her's.
She found she didn't have to try, just like last time, the pain flowed into her.
She gritted her teeth and gripped her abdomen, but kept herself from crying out.
"Miss, are you okay?" The EMT asked her, and she nodded.
"That's...that's amazing," The woman said, gazing at Carter in awe.
She did her best to smile at the woman, and they sat there like that for close to ten minutes until they called that she was stable enough to move.
"Okay, I've gotta let you go now, it's gonna hurt again but it'll be over soon," Carter said, standing as they lifted the stretcher.
She nodded, "Thank you, thank you," was all she said as they carried her away.
"You took her pain?"
The remaining EMT was the one that had found her first, the one that had witnessed everything.
Carter nodded, suddenly awkward at having someone ask about her powers, a stranger.
