"Carter- Carter! Are you paying attention?"
Her head snapped up from her lap, dropping the new suit designs Tony had made for her.
"Cap, code names, remember?" She joked, "I can't be calling you 'Dad' out in the field, it's unprofessional!"
She heard a sigh accompanied by chuckles.
"Lieutenant, do you copy?" He said, slightly exasperated.
"I copy Captain, what's your status?" She asked, bored out of her mind.
Turns out running point behind the scenes wasn't nearly as exciting as Maria made it out to be. Seeing as she wasn't allowed in the field yet, it was all Carter could get. Fortunately, she was allowed to do it on location in case they needed her aid with civilians.
"Quiet, so far, but make sure you're observing attentively, these lessons could mean life or death for you, and others. You're not in the field yet, but you'll need this eventually," He lectured, and Carter rolled her eyes. "You guys see that range rover halfway up the block?" he asked, referring to Wanda and her as they were considered the 'trainees'.
"Yeah, the red one? It's cute," Wanda joked.
"I'd prefer a Jeep, myself. Something Blue, maybe?" Carter added.
"It's also bulletproof, which means private security which means more guns which means more headaches for somebody, probably us,"
"You guys know that I can move things with my mind, right?" The two said at the same time. A pause was heard before they both coughed out their laughter.
"Sorry, continue," Carter said, looking back at the tablet that showed Sam's point of view.
"Looking over your shoulder needs to become second nature," Natasha started.
"Anybody ever tell you you're a little paranoid?" Sam quipped at her.
"Not to my face, no. Why did you hear something?" Nat quipped back before continuing. "You have field training, Kid, but we need to make sure you're ready for the types of fights you'll find yourself in,"
She sighed, hearing an uncomfortable silence ensue.
"HYDRA was thorough, but not big on limiting civilian casualties,"
"Weren't you...like...eight when you got out? How much do you even remember?" Sam asked the only one who never cared about discussing her past.
"They made sure I remembered every second of it. The serum acts in mysterious ways my metal-feathered friend," She gave a vague response, knowing they needed to get back on track.
Steve chimed in at just the right moment, "Eyes on target, folks. This is the best lead on Rumlow we've had in months, I don't wanna lose him. Sam, see that garbage truck? Tag it."
The tablet view switches from Sam's goggles to Redwing's front camera as it approaches the truck, swinging under the back and X-Raying on Sam's orders.
Carter pipes up, "That truck is loaded for max weight, why would they do that?"
"Driver's armed," Sam adds.
"It's a battering ram," Nat says, realization in her voice.
"Go now," Steve says.
"What?" Wanda questions and Carter interjects.
"He's not hitting the police," She says pulling up a digital map and tracking the truck's trajectory, "Institute for Infectious Diseases, right in it's path, get there quick guys,"
