"Hey! Woah, kid he just came back to life, go easy on him!" Tony joked, holding an arm out between Carter and Fury, who was clutching his now-bleeding nose and scowling at her.
She stared, unmoving, at the man who had died. Right in front of her.
He stared right back, unflinching.
Tony didn't interrupt our standoff, he just stood to the side, watching. He looked ready to intercept her at any given moment.
Carter just stared, breathing heavily. The punch had surprised them. Hell, it had surprised her. She told herself he deserved it. Whether it was for lying, or for taking so long to come back, she couldn't be sure. She just knew he deserved it.
She felt so angry. She hadn't felt anger like this towards anyone but her creators. She hadn't felt such a blatant sense of betrayal, to the point of vengeance. She knew people often wanted revenge on people who had done them wrong, and she had felt that way towards H.Y.D.R.A. for a long time.
But this was different, somehow.
This was much, much worse.
She felt her powers roll and churn, her E.A.R.S. making it struggle to reach the surface, but she knew it was trying. She felt it grow, along with her anger. She felt her hands itch with the emptiness. She craved her power.
She craved to use it.
With a jolt, she glanced between the men, quickly realizing how rushed her breathing had gotten and how concerned Tony was looking.
"You okay kid?" Tony asked when she looked at him again, reaching a hand out towards her, like she was an animal he was trying not to startle.
Like he was worried she would lash out.
Carter turned towards the house, catching her reflection and the dull glow that had developed in her eyes.
She was going to lash out.
She was losing control. She felt a familiar rush of panic grow and join the anger, making her power surge even stronger. She was going to fry her E.A.R.S. if it kept this up. She needed to do something before someone got hurt.
Your powers are not your enemy...Wanda's lessons rang in her head.
Ignoring the questioning looks from Fury and Tony, she sprinted for the trees. She knew Tony followed suit, and he most likely yelled for the others. Once she reached what she deemed a safe distance, Carter deactivated her E.A.R.S...the sheer force of her powers rushing to the surface sent her to her knees.
She gasped breathlessly, turning to see Tony and Steve running towards her in the open field.
"Don't! Please!" She shouted, holding a hand out to stop them.
They didn't stop, and she could hear Steve yelling for her.
They were too close, she was too out of control.
She found that well of power. She tried to ease it, to loosen the leash just a little to relieve some tension but a wave escaped and shook the trees. She watched it hit Tony and Steve, and they both stopped in their tracks one hundred feet away, her own fear shining in their eyes.
"Please," She whispered, holding her power with all her strength, "Don't hurt them,"
It power raged, it was fear and anger and betrayal and grief...
But it was all her.
...Don't be afraid...
...it's a part of us...
