A knock on the door startled Carter out of her stupor.
It was five minutes later, and she'd managed to splash some cold water on her face, brush her hair and change into a pair of grey leggings and a black acid-washed T-shirt that was slightly cropped. The style was 'trendy' according to Pepper.
She rushed to the door, snagging her wallet before turning the knob and revealing her two neighbors who stood outside.
"Hey-"
"Hi, sorry, shoes-" Carter interrupted Peter unknowingly, kneeling down to slip on her Converse and tie them.
When she stood again, Peter smiled at her awkwardly beside a chestnut-haired Italian woman.
"Oh my gosh, hi! Peter- uh...said he was having a friend join us, I wasn't expecting..." She trailed off, taking in Carter's face.
The girl persed her lips, "A clone?" She joked, hoping the woman had a sense of humor.
Luckily, the woman smiled and snickered slightly.
"No, a girl,"
The joke took both Carter and Peter off-guard, and they both awkwardly laughed with her while avoiding eye contact with each other.
The woman looked between the two, a glint in her eye, but she simply gestured for them to follow her down the hall.
"C'mon kids, I'm starved!"
Carter locked her door behind her, and they began their walk down to the lobby.
The walk to the Thai restaurant was uneventful. Just May asking Peter basic questions about school and decathlon practice.
It wasn't until they were at the restaurant that she turned her attention on Carter.
They'd just had their order taken, Carter getting the same thing Peter did because she was painfully unfamiliar with Thai food.
"So, Carter, how are you enjoying public school? Good first day?" The woman asked, clearly having some sort of understanding of her situation.
"Umm...well you could say it's...new..." She offered, glancing between Peter and his Aunt.
May shot Peter a subtle, questioning glance, but Carter caught it anyways.
"Ms. Sinclair,"
That was all he had to say.
"Oh, god, that woman infuriates me!" May threw her hands in the air, "She is my least favorite of Peter's teachers. What happened?"
The girl smiled at her antics, "She thought my...devices were headphones, and uh...tried to 'confiscate' them..." The girl said, using air quotes for emphasis.
May's face fell.
"I am so sorry, Carter, that- god, she should be suspended for a stunt like that. The legal ramifications alone, not to mention violating your IEP, discrimination lawsuits...she could get in a lot of trouble..." The woman ranted, frowning sadly at Carter, "What are they going to do about it?" she asked.
Peter spoke up this time, "Carter was removed from the class,"
May nodded, "Good. One less thing to worry about," She said, turning her attention to the waiter when he brought their food.
"So, Carter," May spoke up again one he was out of earshot, "If you don't mind me asking, what made you choose midtown?"
The girl froze, glancing at Peter. His eyes were wide, and curious. He didn't know.
