¤Chapter Thirty-three¤
One minute I'm floating and the next I'm drowning.
That's how I felt. On the outside, you'll see a girl lying on her bed and staring blankly at a small crack on the ceiling. On the inside, my mind traveled in every direction. Now that I have a few minutes to myself I can gather my thoughts but at the moment I have more questions than answers.
My room feels too stuffy and depressing. If I wasn't potentially being watched I would go to the pond but even that place feels different now. Although it was just for a short time, I've shared that space with someone so it's no longer mine.
I have a sinking gut feeling that something is brewing in the background. It's been too quiet lately and considering who's come to town recently, that means trouble. He attacked Jace first but never made any direct attempts at pursuing me. A couple months ago, I waited earnestly for this very moment but now I'm worried.
I'm not the only one involved anymore.
I turned on my side and looked at the rays seeping through the closed blinds. That's the thing about light, it'll always find a way in even when you try to block its path. If Owen's the light, I thought, then I'm the glass that surrounds the bulb, keeping it safe while giving it room to shine.
The doorbell rang, pulling me from contemplation. I walked past my mirror and paused. For the first time in a while I felt the need to change or fix my appearance but laziness won and I opened the door downstairs wearing black silk pajamas. Owen stood before me in a white button down shirt tucked into a pair of black jeans. He looked like a teenage heartthrob.
"I thought you were just stopping by for a few minutes," I studied his appearance accusingly. "You're dressed like we're going on a date."
"Well," He brought forward a hand hidden behind his back and presented a bouquet of circus roses. "I decided to wow you"
"I'm wowed but wowing usually comes before the relationship starts, no?" I took the bicolored roses and stared at the petals in awe. The center is bright yellow while the outside and edges are a deep shade of red —almost the same color as the streaks in my hair. They look fierce and delicate at the same time. The fragrance is sweet but there's a kick to it that will probably burn your nose off if you sniff it too long.
It's perfect.
"I'll wow my girlfriend whenever I feel like it." He pouted in a way that even I thought was cute.
He watched while I filled an empty vase with water and dropped the roses in. I want to call them fire roses because that's what they remind me of; something that looks pretty but might bite if you get too close.
"I'm bringing these to my room," I announced. "You can come if you want." I headed up the stairs without waiting for him to follow.
"When I saw them I thought of you instantly" There was a hint of pride in his voice. Our eyes met in the mirror and I quickly looked away, pretending to focus on something on the vase. Why do I feel shy all of a sudden?
"I thought fireflies reminded you of me?" I probed as I moved my lamp to make space on my nightstand.
He grinned. "Yes but unfortunately I didn't have enough time to catch any so these are the next best thing"
