¤Chapter Twenty-three¤
«One Year Ago«
Brittney giggled as she dragged me through the door, her golden locks was a hue of colors from the disco ball dangling haphazardly from the ceiling. The room was stuffy from the large amount of people jumping and screaming and... grinding. I'm too awkward for a place like this. Her delicately pampered hands clasped firmly around my wrist and although I could probably twist away with little effort, I allowed her to drag me in the middle of the dance floor.
"I'd rather go home and read a book or something!" I yelled over the music.
"C'mon Madison!" She danced around me almost twisting her ankles in the process. I told her those heels were a bad idea. "Loosen up a little, you just got here"
"Well you're a bit too loose if you ask me," I swayed from side to side in an awful attempt to dance and blend in. "How much did you drink?"
"Four shots of tequila and one beer" She grabbed my hands and began jumping, leaving me no choice but to do the same.
"Brit!" I chastised. "You're gonna feel that in the morning —remember what happened last week?"
She scuffed, unaware that her words are already beginning to slur, "Puh-lease, I can go for like, six more!"
"Well I've had none and I already feel lightheaded," I laughed at her horrified expression before continuing. "These parties are way too intense for me"
Just then a commotion broke out at the other end of the living room making us pause. They're so loud it can be heard over the music.
"That's my girl, you dick!"
Lounging in a couch with his arms casually thrown back and a girl sitting on his leg was Todd Anderson, his hair as dark as midnight and his eyes a golden hue. His shirt was unbuttoned slightly so black ink from his tattoo can be seen from certain angles —or if you stared which I certainly was not doing.
While the angry party goer yelled at him, he kept his face blank and expressionless, as if he was bored. The girl took the opportunity to cling to him even more, pretending that her raging boyfriend scared her. Maybe he did but it's obvious she's using this opportunity to get closer to Todd somehow.
He looks like a blessing and a curse combined into one mysterious package. Most girls go crazy for him and I can't say I'm any different. We've all heard stories about his many... talents and although I'm mostly curious about him as a person, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious about the rumors as well. He's bad news but I'd still like to— Just then, his gaze landed on mine from across the room as if he could hear my very thoughts. A chill ran down my spine.
"He's always causing trouble at parties," Brittney scuffed then glanced at me sideways. "But inviting him brings a form entertainment, don't you think?"
"Huh?" I'm the first to break eye contact. "You think this is entertaining?"
She pretended to swoon. "Why, of course, the highlight of my night"
I watched her eyes taking him in boldly from head to toe. I wish I had her confidence but even when he looked at me just now, I wasn't able to handle the intensity behind it. Todd and I are from two completely different worlds. Whenever Brittney catches me staring at him she teases me about but I'm not sure if she likes him as a conquest or if she's genuinely interested in having a relationship with him.
She always seems to know every small detail about his life like who he hung out with yesterday or where his favorite go-to spot is. He's the kind of guy I don't mind admiring from a distance so if she dated him it might be awkward at first, but I won't care because they're way more compatible than us. I'm invisible to everyone and he's no different.
