5 years later

I'm sitting on the balcony of a villa we booked out in Ibiza. It has a great view of the ocean which just happens to go well with a glass of wine and some good company.

The German guys are having a meet up before the start of the season and everyone goes their own ways. I'm not exactly sure who's coming but Timo and Rudi's girlfriends are here, which is all the entertainment I'll ever need.

Julian is joking around at the barbeque when I see an all too familiar face walk in the front door.

My heart starts beating at the sight of Kai and someone else.

"Looks like Kai brought a plus one," Kat says discreetly.
"Who is she?" I ask wanting to know before they get outside.
"That would be his ex girlfriend, Caitlin," Samantha says.

I get up from my seating to greet them both.

I awkwardly give Kai a hug without much words exchanged. I give his new, or rather old, girl a warm smile.

"I'm Kara, nice to meet you," I say.
"Caitlin," she replies.
"Good to see you again," Anna says.
"I had no idea you and Kai were seeing each other again," Angelina says.
"It's relatively new," she says with a smile.
"Well a warm welcome back to the gang," Anna says handing her a glass of wine.

"So Kai being the smart ass he is, has skipped all the hard work, because lunch is served," Timo says placing a plate stacked with meat taken right off the grill.
"Not bad for a German," Kat says with a laugh.
"Don't listen to her, all Americans think their barbeques are better than the rest of the world's," Kevin says patting Timo on the chest as he grabs a seat at the table.
"No holding back guys," Timo says before we all start digging in to the food.

"Let me be the first to say how good it is to be with everyone after a long off season," Angelina says.
"Speaking of that, what did everyone else get up to this off season?" Samantha says.
"Well I was in California for the graduation of this book worm. Aced her undergrad and is on her way to masters," Kevin says proudly has he squeezes Kat's shoulder.
"I saw the pictures on Instagram, it looked like tons of fun," I say.
"So I guess you're officially the smartest person at this table," Timo says jokingly.
"What did you get up to this summer Timo?" Kat asks.
"Nothing major like graduating. Anna and I just spent some time in Greece and did a short trip to Mexico," he says.
"Explains the tan," Julian says with a laugh.
"What did you get up to, hopefully practicing some golf so I don't annihilate you this season," Timo says to Kai.
"Caitlin and I just spent a few weeks catching up back in the hometown," Kai says with a smile.

I give Kat a look from across the table. She tries to suppress a laugh.

"So you two an official thing now?" Anna asks.
"Yeah, felt good to press that unpause button," Kai says kissing the side of her head.

I take a sip of my wine as Julian leaves a subtle kiss on top of my head.

"What about you Rudi? Any summer stories to share?" Samantha asks in an attempt to change the subject.
"Not much, just spent most of our time getting packed into the new house," he says.
"Are you guys missing the old place yet?" Manuel asks.
"Not really, the new part of London we're in is a lot more relaxed," Sarah says.

"What about you and Sam, anything exciting?" Kai asks Manuel.
"Not at all, just started up on getting the nursery ready for the little bub," Samantha says with a smile.
"I can't wait for a little baby Neuer running around," I say with a smile.
"Oh trust, I think he'll be on his way soon. He's a real kicker," Samantha says with a laugh.

"But the real question is for Kevin and Kat, how's it coming along with the newborn?" Anna asks.
"Sleep deprived, barely got make up on this morning, life is good," Kat says with a laugh
"You say that with so much sarcasm, but we all know you wouldn't have it any other way," Kevin says.
"Most definitely, I think Samantha will know what I'm talking about pretty soon," Angelina says with a laugh.

"What about you and Julian, anything to share," Kat says to me.
"Well...." I say with a smile.

I dramatically rest my chin on my left hand exposing my engagement ring.

"Spent some time in the Maldives, came back with a fiancée," Julian says with a smile on his face.
"This calls for a toast," Kat says excitedly grabbing her wine glass, "biggest congratulations to the soon to be Mr and Mrs Brandt!"
"Cheers!" We all say in unison.

We all finish up lunch. After a few congratulations, I see Kai standing alone in the kitchen.

"Mind if we have a chat?" I ask.

He shrugs his shoulders.

"I know that news came to you as a bit of a surprise," I say.
"I don't think me showing up with Caitlin was any less of a surprise," he says.
"You look happy," I say.
"I am. I guess it took me a few years, but I finally realized what an amazing woman I left years ago," he says.
"As long as you're happy, I'm happy," I say.
"You and Julian look happy. Must be serious if marriage is on the cards," he says.
"Yeah, he's a good guy," I say.
"He is," he says.
"So I know there's nothing left between us, but I just want to say how happy I am that things worked out for the both of us," I say.
"I am too, we were right for each other at the wrong time," he says.
"Well, I wish you all the best," I say before leaving the kitchen.
"Hey Kar," he calls out.

I turn around to see what he has to say.

"Thank you," he says.
"For what," I ask with a confused face.
"For breaking my heart so I could find my one," he says with a smile.

I wink at him before going back outside feeling a huge weight being lifted off my shoulders.

Julian is standing at the table watching Timo and Kevin set up a game of Jenga.

I wrap my arms around his torso and lean my head against his chest. He rubs his hands up and down my arm.

"I love ya bubs," I say kissing his cheek.
"Where's all this love coming from?" He asks smiling down at me.
"Things are just falling into place," I say with a smile.
