And the worst best friend in the world award goes to me.

Matthijs and I are on holiday in Greece after the end of the season.

I'm relaxing on a day bed discreetly looking at him and his girlfriend messing around in the pool.

I my roll my eyes at the sight of them looking smitten and in love.

Yanicke and Matthijs, everyone just loves them. Captain of Ajax and Holland's next up and coming model.

I call BS. I was the one who introduced her to Matthijs. We were best friends in high school and she just happened to fall in love with him.

I'm interrupted from my pity party when they call me.

"Frenkie, what's with the sad face, come join us," Matthijs shouts.
"We promise not to wet your perfect hair," Yanicke says with a laugh.
"Least of my problems," I say getting up to go back in the house, "perks of being on vacation, I get to take a nap whenever I like, which is what I intend to do."

I go back into the house having had enough of them. I pass through the kitchen grabbing a bottle of water before heading up to my room.

I peep out the window seeing Yanicke wrap her arms around him with a smile on her face.

I'm glad I could give them their alone time. Just great.

I go on Instagram. I pass the time by looking at memes and posts from some of my old high school friends.

I hear the laughs of Matthijs and Yanicke in the house, signalling that they're done outside.

"I'm just gonna jump in the shower and get ready for dinner," Matthijs says from the hallway.

I see Yanicke pop her head into my room.

"Mind if I annoy you for a bit," she says sitting on the empty side of my bed.
"Good to know I'm second on the list after Matthijs," I say sounding more bitter than I meant to.

She narrows her eyes in confusion.

"Did I miss something?" She asks.
"Nope," I say bluntly.
"Frenkie," she says trying to get more out of me.
"You're wetting the sheets with your towel," I say avoiding the topic at hand.
"And when has that ever bothered you," she says shifting closer to me, "tell me what's up."
"Stop acting like you suddenly care," I say getting up and walking to the window.
"We're best friends, of course I care," she says.

I turn around slightly angered at her mentioning us being best friends.

"No we're not. We stopped being best friends the minute you started dating Matthijs," I say.
"I asked you if you were okay with us dating and you said it was fine so I don't get where all of this coming from," she says.
"That's the thing, I was okay with it, and now all I want to do is bawl my eyes out when I see you two together," I say.
"Well then why did you come on holiday with us?" She asks.
"Because maybe, just maybe, seeing me would make you remember all the things we promised each other in high school," I say.
"We were teenagers when we made those promises Frenkie, they weren't meant to actually happen," she says.
"Well I guess that makes me stupid for holding out for them to happen," I say.
"Are you serious?" She asks with a hint of concern.
"I wouldn't be telling you this if I didn't believe that there was still something between us," I say shaking my head, "but it doesn't matter now anyway."

She grabs hold of my arm stopping me from leaving the room.

"It matters to me," she says.
"Personally, I think you'd be better off with somebody like me, but, that doesn't matter because you're with Matthijs now. And I won't risk doing anything because either way, I'd be ruining my friendship with the both of you," I say wanting to leave the room.

"Maybe if you had told me earlier," she calls out.
"Honestly ask yourself if that would've changed anything," I say turning at the doorway.

She sadly shakes her head. I give her a sad smile and a shoulder shrug.

"Exactly, our story doesn't have a happy ending. We just have empty high school promises," I say before leaving her standing helpless in my room.
