A part of me was unsure if I could keep that promise to her

A part of me was unsure if I could keep that promise to her. I didn't doubt that I would protect her with all I had, but the other part was unsure how Elias would handle the situation.

"Elias, I know you said the girl has to go, but I promise she won't say anything," I said as the guys walked in.

"Shanice, I really can't deal with this right now," he said, pushing past me.

"What's going on?" I asked Caesar.

"It's Lelani. She attacked Athena, and nobody knows where she is," he said.

"What? Is she okay?" I asked, panic rising.

"Yeah, she's fine, but we have to find Lelani," Caesar said as Elias walked back into the room.

"I need to speak with the kid," Elias said, and the little girl hid behind me.

"Elias, she said she wouldn't—"

"Stop talking!... You've been fucking up since you got here. Now give me the fucking child," he said, cutting me off.

"I can't, Elias," I said, and Caesar snatched the girl away from me. She began to scream and fight as Caesar handed her to Elias.

"Let go of me!" the little girl yelled as Elias pulled her to a room.

"Elias, let her go!" I yelled as Caesar pulled me back.

"Shanice, stop," Caesar said, trying to hold me back.

"Get off of me," I said, pushing him away.

"He's right, you know... we both have been a little out of it but—"

"I'm out of it because I have a heart, because I care what happens to people," I said, cutting him off.

"Yes... but you can't make decisions based on emotions. That alone can get everyone you love killed. When will you realize that? You don't know that kid, yet you're willing to risk your life for her. What is that?" he asked.

"I was once her, scared and alone, not knowing what the next day would hold or what people would do to me. I made her a promise, Caesar... I made her a fucking promise... I plan on keeping it," I said, walking up to the door. Elias and the little girl came out.

"Are you okay?" I asked, grabbing her and checking if she was hurt. She nodded.

"Shanice, the girl can stay with you both," Elias said.

"What happened to 'no witnesses'?" Caesar asked.

"We've come to an agreement," Elias said, looking at the little girl, who nodded back at him.

"This is crazy," Caesar said, shaking his head.

"You will move in with Shanice and the child—"

"Elias, I can take care of her alone," I said.
