I made my way around getting everyone when I spotted someone in the back.
It was Nick.
When Lorenzo got back I forgot to mention the deal I made with Nick.
"Hi," I said smiling at him.
"Hello, happy birthday." He spoke nicely.
He handed me an envelope and I opened it immediately. I couldn't wait to see what he had written on the card.
Dear Anna, I have taken care of Leonardo and he won't be a bother to you anymore. I want to know the details about my new job in the next week so I can be ready. Happy birthday.
I put the card back in and looked up at him with thank you eyes.
"I haven't spoken about it with Lorenzo, but I will," I said.
He smirked, "You better hope he says yes Anna Hunt."
He left me wondering what that meant. Was Nick threatening me? I shrugged it off and decided to head to the bar.
I got a martini and stood there drinking it. I was thankful for Kate or whoever planned it but I wasn't in the mood to party.
I saw Mario coming over and I put on a smile. I didn't want to worry him.
"Hi," I said.
"Hey." He answered.
"Happy birthday." He spoke happily.
I nodded.
"You don't seem too happy." He said sadly.
"No, I am, I just didn't expect to have a big party filled with people I don't know," I responded.
He nodded.
"It was Kate's idea." He laughed.
I laughed with him because I should have expected this from Kate. She's the nicest human person that loves doing things for others but never for herself.
Mario and I talked for a while before I decided I would go talk to the party planner.
Kate was talking to a group of people, but when she saw me she left them and turned to me.
"How do you like your party?" She asks as she pulls me into a hug.
"It's great, thanks," I answered.
She chuckled. "I can tell when you're lying."
I smiled. "It's my first birthday without my dad, and now that I think of it my mom too," I explained.
Her face changed and I could tell she was feeling sympathy for me.
"How did you plan this whole party without me knowing?" I asked, trying to lighten the mood.
She laughed. "It was pretty easy, I had written everything down in my secret journal no one know about and today you stayed in your room all day, so it was easy for things and people to come." She explained.
"Oh yeah, the door had been opened so you couldn't hear it when it would slam." She added.
I nodded. "Well done." I chuckled.
The hall looked beautiful. I had never been on there so I didn't know what had been added but the calendulas taped on the wall were for me.
If I haven't mentioned it, calendula's are my favourite flowers. I'm not sure why I guess because they're pretty.
Kate and I discussed different topics. It's always fun talking to Kate because you never know what she's going to say.
My phone started ringing and I took it out. Kate glared at me because I probably should have brought my phone but I had to.
My mom still hasn't texted or called to say happy birthday. Maybe she's given up trying to talk to me.
I took it out and started heading to the back garden. I didn't recognize the phone number but I still answered.
"Hello," I spoke politely.
"Hi, is this Anna Hunt?" He asked.
"Yes," I answered nervously.
How does he know me, and why is he calling?
A lot of questions ran through my brain but it all stopped when he started to speak.
"Anna, I'm sorry to say this but your mom has sadly passed." He said sympathetically.
I couldn't feel my legs anymore. My phone slipped from my hand as I went down to the ground.
No tears ran down my face, and I didn't feel sad. I was just purely in shock.
I could hear faint noises coming from my phone but I ignored them.
I'm not sure how long I had been sitting outside. I wasn't moving, I was just looking ahead.
Why did this have to happen to me?
I think of the fight my mom and I had and how I didn't answer any of her messages for a year.
A whole year.
I heard the door slide open and I still didn't budge.
I didn't look up because I didn't care who it was. I didn't care whether it was someone coming to kill me and I didn't care if it was a friend.
Someone sits beside me and from his voice, I knew who it was.
"What's wrong?" Lorenzo asked.
I tried to speak but nothing came out. I couldn't find the voice to speak.
I started crying because of my frustration and the fact that my mom, the only family I had was now gone.
Lorenzo put his arm around my shoulder and pulled me closer to him. I cried into his chest for God knows how long.
I finally wiped away the tears and dared to explain.
"I just got a call that um, my mom passed," I said.
All his features softened more than before if that's even possible. He pulled me back close and I didn't stop him.
"I'm sorry Anna." He whispered.
I chuckled. It wasn't a happy one but more of a sad one.
"I didn't get to say goodbye," I spoke quietly.
He nodded. "I know." He whispered.
Lorenzo ran his hand through my hair which was making me sleepy.
"Why does this happen to me, Lorenzo?" I asked.
He said nothing for a few minutes before responding with an answer I didn't understand at all.
"Because you're special." He responded.
His answer confused me. How did this make me special? I decided not to ask because I think I've had enough of talking for one night.
I yawned and closed my eyes.
"You're too special for this world Anna Hunt." He whispered that I nearly couldn't hear him.
