It hasn’t been 24 hours since we found out that Kenzie was actually mine and we are on a plane heading to Leesburg for a few days for the reading of Lee’s will. It’s already been postponed once because we lost the baby, and as much as neither me nor Bridget didn’t want to go, we knew it had to be done. There really hadn’t been much said between either of us either about it, but I knew that we were going to have to talk about it soon. I’m sure Kenzie has realized that something is up. All Bridget seems to do when we are all in the same room is cry. She’s really emotional anyway over the loss of the baby, but throwing this on top of everything makes it much worse.
“How are we going to tell Kenzie?” I asked Bridget as the plane started to descend.
“We are just going to have to sit her down and tell her the best that we can,” Bridget answered me.
“She’s going to hate me,” I sighed as Bridget laid her head on my shoulder.
“She’s not going to hate you. If she hates anyone, it will be me,” Bridget informed me.
“Kenzie would never hate you. You’ve been her everything since the day she was born. I’m the one who wasn’t always there,” I enlightened my wife.
“She’s going to hate me for keeping this from her. She won’t see it like it is. She will see it as me keeping you from her. It’s not like she ever even knew Gavin anyways. He died way before she ever even had the chance,” Bridget cried. I hated seeing her cry, especially when I didn’t know what to say.
“She won’t hate you,” I assured her as I wrapped my arm around her.
“Thank you for flying Southwest Airlines. We are currently taxing to the gate and will unload momentarily. I hope you have enjoyed your flight,” the flight attendant said through the intercom.
“Who’s going to pick us up?” Bridget asked me as she wiped the tears from her eyes.
“Jordan is,” I told her, “I talked to Momma before we left and she said that Jordan had some things she needed to get in Albany so she would just pick us up while we were out.”
“Okay,” Bridget said as we started to unload the plane.
We walked out of the terminal slowly. My ankle was getting better, but I still limped and I still had to wear this damn boot. I’m so over this, but I only have one more week. It will be gone by Christmas. I wrapped my arm around Bridget’s shoulder and she wrapped hers around my waist. I felt like a kid again when we were like this, but I loved every minute of it. We made our way through the airport and waited for our luggage. Thankfully Bridget was an expert at packing and managed to get all of our stuff into three bags. We had one each that we carried on the plane and one that we had to check. As we were standing there, someone came up behind us and grabbed Bridget. I turned around quick ready to swing, only to realize it was Jordan.
“You scared the shit out of me,” I exclaimed while Bridget and Jordan laughed, “I could have hurt you.”
“Til could take you down right now,” Jordan laughed at me.
“She’s right,” Bridget giggled right along with Jordan.
“I think ya’ll are both full of shit,” I said as I turned back to look for our one bag. As soon as it came around I grabbed it and we headed out to Jordan’s car.
“Where’s your car?” Bridget asked as we strolled through the parking lot.
“I have granddaddy’s truck,” Jordan said as we turned the corner and there it was.
“Why do you have dad’s truck?” I asked her curiously.
“My car is in the shop. Til hit a baseball into the back door. There’s a huge dent in it. I should be able to pick it up tomorrow,” Jordan answered me as we loaded into the truck.
