It’s been several days since I had my surgery and I got to come home the next day. Luke and I had spent the majority of the time by ourselves. Our oldest three were all in school, the twins were out with Tia, and Jordan, Kris, and Til had returned to Leesburg at the insistence of Tommy and LeClaire after I went to the hospital. It killed them, but they did as their grandparents had told them. The whole miscarriage had taken its toll on me and Luke both. We didn’t talk to anyone for days, with the exception of the kids. We really hadn’t talked much about the whole thing, but I knew the time would come. Even though it killed the both of us, the possibility of Kenzie being Luke’s was on the forefront of our minds. Carter came over this morning. He’s officially the only person other than Luke and I that know there is a possibility of Luke being Kenzie’s father. Surprisingly he took the news well and really didn’t seem shocked about it.
“How could this be true? How could you be Kenzie’s dad?” I asked Luke as we sat in the kitchen.
“I just don’t know. The first time we ever did anything was that night in the other house. The night I lost it,” Luke said still in shock from the news.
“You two seriously don’t remember do you?” Carter asked us.
“Remember what?” Luke and I asked at the same time.
“That night ya’ll were all over each other. Back when I was dating Krisi,” Carter answered us.
“What are you talking about? There were a lot of nights when it was just the four of us,” I questioned him.
“When you just showed up at the apartment after driving all night. Right after you transferred to UK,” Carter informed me.
“Oh, that night. We had so much to drink that night. I don’t even remember leaving the bar. The next thing I knew I woke up in Luke’s bed,” I said finally remembering when he was talking about.
“It wasn’t a dream?” Luke questioned out of the blue.
“No, it wasn’t a dream. Trust me on that. I heard more than I wanted and that wasn’t much,” Carter informed Luke.
“How could you have not told me? How could you have just sat there?” Luke questioned Carter with anger in his voice.
“I really didn’t know how to tell you. What was I supposed to say, ‘Luke, you just fucked your exes best friend and damn near did it in the backseat of my car while I was driving’?” Carter explained, “You wouldn’t have believed me. You were in denial about your feelings for Bridget then. I tried telling you that you were in love with Bridget, but you refused to listen. I told you when you told me you were going to marry Caroline. Hell, I told you on your wedding day too.”
“What? In the backseat of your car?” I questioned, “Why didn’t you stop us?”
“How was I supposed to do that?” Carter asked me, “Ya’ll were all over each other.”
I just glared at him. I don’t see how all of these years passed and he never mentioned anything to even make Luke suspect something had happened between us that night. I can’t believe he knew and we didn’t for over ten years. I looked up at Luke and he was lost. He was in shock just like I was, but maybe more. Was he remembering that night? Was he remembering the night we had spent together? My thoughts were interrupted when my phone rang.
“Hello,” I said plainly.
“Mrs. Bryan?” the lady on the phone questioned.
“This is her. Can I help you?” I asked.
“This is Candace from Dr. McCall’s office. You’re test results are in. She has an opening in an hour in her office downstairs. Would you be able to make an appointment at that time?” Candace asked politely.
