I sat straight up in bed. As I looked around Bridget was sitting in the chair in the corner crying. I got out of bed and walked towards her. She wouldn’t look at me.
“What’s wrong?” I asked as I knelt down in front of her.
“I can’t find my pain meds,” Bridget cried.
“I’ll get them. They are downstairs. What happened?” I asked before leaving.
“You rolled over on it while you were tossing and turning,” Bridget said through her sobs.
“I’m so sorry baby,” I whispered.
“You didn’t mean to. Just go get me something. Please,” Bridget begged me.
“Come with me,” I said as I helped her up.
We walked down the stairs slowly and into the kitchen where her medicine was. When I reached to grab it I knocked a jar off the counter.
“Shit!” I said quietly, “I hope I didn’t wake anyone up.”
“I’m sure everyone is good and out,” Bridget told me.
I picked up the jar and sat it in the sink.
“Here,” I said as I handed Bridget her medicine and a glass of water.
We started moving back to the bedroom, but when we came out of the kitchen Jason and Adam were waiting with guns drawn.
“What the fuck?” Bridget screamed.
“Sorry,” Jason apologized, “We didn’t know you were down here.”
“We were in the office when we heard something in the kitchen,” Adam explained.
“I don’t care about your damn excuses!” Bridget yelled at them as she stormed up the stairs.
“I’m sorry, guys,” I apologized as I followed Bridget to our room.
“Never in my life did I think I would have a gun pulled on me by anyone I knew!” Bridget shouted as I entered the room.
“Babe, they didn’t know it was us!” I explained to her.
“Don’t babe me! Luke they could have shot you! Or me and our child!” Bridget yelled in return.
“I know, but they didn’t! They know what they are doing!” I shouted back.
“I’m going to bed. Goodnight Luke,” Bridget said as she plopped down in the middle of the bed.
“Where am I supposed to sleep?” I asked her seeing there was no way I could fit on either side of her.
“There’s a chair and there’s the floor. You pick,” Bridget said as she threw a pillow at me.
Why was Bridget so mad at me? These damn pregnancy hormones of hers are going to kill me. I picked up the pillow she threw and went to the chair. I tossed and turned. Not only was my dream still on my mind, but I just couldn’t sleep sitting up. Bridget is still in the middle of the bed, sound asleep, so sneaking into bed was out of the question. I guess I’ll lie on the floor. I made a small pallet on the floor next to the bed and lay down. As uncomfortable as it was, it was much better than the chair. I was completely exhausted by this point and quickly dozed off into a deep sleep.
“She’s just scared. You shouldn’t have given up so easily. She needs you,” Caroline told me.
“It’s completely okay. I understand that she’s going to have these fits sometimes,” I replied.
“Fits or no fits, she needs you. You shouldn’t have given up,” Caroline said.
“It’s all about picking your battles,” I stated.
