"Mastering" the magic I "know"

We were standing in a forest clearing. My mother's family was very influential in Germany and that was why owning a private forest was no surprise for her.

Oga was dragged into this. Mother told him that she would only forgive him if he agreed to help her train me. He already saw what she was capable of so he immediately nodded his head. However, he got even more motivated when my mother said that she might give him some money if my training goes well.

"Now, Fely... I have a question", mother said.

"What is it?"

"Do you know when to use magic?"

"I know a lot of magic. Father and uncle told me that a magician shouldn't only follow one system of magic and must be versatile. From Eastern Spiritology to Kaballah Numerology to even African Pagan Magic, I am capable of doing it."

Oga sighed, "This kid doesn't get it."

"Excuse me?"

"She's asking if you know WHEN to use magic and not HOW to use it."

"What do you mean by that?"

"Fely... "Knowing" is different from "mastering." Do you know that?" Mother asked.

"Aren't they the same? If you know something, you have already mastered it. For example, I can explain the process of increasing my mana output. My knowledge of it shows my mastery."

"Kid. That's wrong. Can you do punches or kicks?" Oga asked.

"Easily."

"Then try hitting me with one of those."

I walked towards him and threw a punch. However, he easily avoided it. I threw another punch but he avoided it once again. No matter how I tried to punch or kick him, I couldn't land a hit.

"See? This is the difference", Oga said.

"I don't understand. What's your point?" I asked.

"I believe what Oga is trying to say is that you know how to punch and kick. But you don't know when to use it", Mother answered.

"Look here, kiddo. You know how to punch and kick. I can see you're trained in martial arts since your forms are good. But you don't know when to use it. Let's take your punches. You know how to jab, cross, hook, and uppercut but you don't know when you should use them. There were times when you jabbed even if it's better to hook", Oga explained.

"The same can be said for magic, Fely. You may know a lot of magic but are you using them properly?" Mother asked.

I understood what she was trying to say. There was no point in knowing much magic when I couldn't use them efficiently.

"I always thought I was doing well. I am an S-ranked Enforcer and I captured many dangerous magicians", I said.

"Here's the thing, Fely. Magicians aren't warriors. They are scholars. Not all of them know how to fight", Mother told me.

"What do you mean by that?" I asked.

"When two magicians fight each other, it would become a contest of who knows stronger magic and has the larger mana capacity. A magician would try to overpower the opposing magician using magic. The fight will just be a game of shooting out one magic after another and hopefully defeat the opposing side", Mother explained.

"Magicians rely on chants and other things so a fight between the two of them is like taking turns. The loser will be the one who first depletes their mana or gets overwhelmed by the magic of the enemy." Oga added
