I survived... somehow

My dreams were often weird. At least, all the dreams I remembered were weird. Other people would dream about the people they liked confessing to them or about a situation they always wanted to happen in real life.

My most recent dream was that I was riding a pink tiger while playing a game of football with fish-headed creatures that had a cat's body while the audience were filled with donkeys that had dragon wings. Yeah... Weird.

But my dream this time was not the usual... It was a memory.

I was standing over a grave. The funeral was over and I already cried my eyes out. Grief, regret, and guilt were on my heart as I muttered "Sorry" over and over again.

My father approached me and patted my shoulder. He was normally a sunny guy who always had a playful smile. But in this memory, his face was solemn,

"Deaths are normal in this side of the world", he said.

"But... it's all my fault. If only I paid attention, then he would still be alive", I replied.

"That may be the truth but it is not everything."

"What do you mean? As a magician, the truth is everything."

"No... Do not get caught up in what is the truth. A magician should focus on what to do with it. Knowledge is merely having clarity of the truths while wisdom is having the ability to make good decisions with that truth. A magician should seek to be wise."

"Then in this situation... How can I be wise when the truth is that I caused his death?"

"The truth is that you caused his death. But you can view it as he protected you. He knew your potential, your hopes, and your capabilities to be worth protecting. The truth is: you are important to him and if he was alive, he would smack you for beating yourself up over a decision he made. I'm not telling you to stop moping around. Take all the time you need to get over your grief. And once you do, you can take his will."

"His will?"

Father smiled, "You know what he always said, "Save the people who can't be saved." Since he used up his life to save you, then wouldn't it be nice if you repaid him by following his ideals?"

He left me as I stared at the grave.

I opened my eyes and saw the ceiling. My body felt heavy like I just exercised a lot. There was a nagging headache on my mind and I looked around the room. What in the world happened?

Remembering that I fought against a powerful creature, I sat up and gathered my mana. She was not in the room and I was still alive... Why did she spare me? The last thing I remembered was her killing intent as she wrapped a tentacle around my neck.

Oh yeah... Someone interfered in our fight. Before I passed out, someone talked to that girl. Who was that?

"You're awake... What happened?" the school nurse asked.

"Choco-sensei... So I'm at the clinic", I muttered.

"You have no idea on how Tokoyami-san reacted when she found you in the school's courtyard."

"Tokoyami-san found me?"

"Yes. After an earthquake, Tokoyami-san said that she found you lying there. What happened to you? You seem to be healthy to pass out like that."

"Oh... It's just that I didn't get any sleep last night so I sort of passed out."

"Really? You thought it would be a good idea to sleep there?"
