"Did you call for a devil?" the purple-haired girl asked.
She was wearing our school's uniform and was around my age. Was she really a demon? But her coming to my house wasn't just a coincidence and she asked me whether I needed a demon or not.
I took a good look at her face and remembered who she was.
"Wait.. Aren't you Tokoyami-san?" I asked.
"Eh... You're Takeda-kun!" she exclaimed.
I invited her to my house and offered to have dinner with me. She accepted and we started eating dinner. Although I planned to cook extra portions for tonight so I could eat it tomorrow, it couldn't be helped. I was a modern magician who was also a gentleman.
"So... You're a demon", I said.
Her name was Tokoyami Towa, a classmate of mine. She had long purple hair that was tied in twintails and had a black hat. Now that I thought about it, her hat had two horns that resembled a devil's.
I never bothered to check if my classmates were normal humans or not. For starters, it was rude to use magic to check other people. Unless there was a legitimate reason, a magician shouldn't freely use magic. That was the first lesson my father taught me when he was training me in the mystical arts.
"And you're a magician. I always thought you were different from the other students but I never imagined that you would hide this kind of secret", she replied.
I finished my meal and I looked at her. If she knew about my attempted summoning, then she must be the real deal... But I had one question.
"Why didn't you appear on the magic circle when I summoned you?" I asked.
"The truth is... I was busy at that time. I was in a situation where I couldn't just leave that place so I had to delay my appearance. When I was no longer busy, I found out that the link for the summoning was gone. That's why I had to ride my bike to this place", she answered.
"I see... And why are you the demon that I summoned? What's the criteria for choosing a demon?"
"I don't really know how management does it. But I heard it depends on how much mana you used, your mana type, and the availability of the demons. Demons who are working on a contract wouldn't be summoned."
"I see... That clears things up."
Tokoyami-san finished her meal and stood up.
"So? What is your desire? As a demon, I will do everything in my power for the right price", she grinned.
I should choose my words properly... Demons do everything they can to distort your words to fit their liking. Vague wishes were not good.
"Summon Abra-Melin the mage from the realms of the dead. I have some questions for him", I said.
The truth was: I just wanted to experience summoning a demon and forming a simple contract with them. There were ways to consult the dead using magic but most of them were expensive rituals. I could learn about the Abra-Melin system from its creator and have an experience of working with a demon. That was two birds with one stone.
Abra-Melin's methods were amazing. From his magic word squares to summoning your own guardian angel, his system of magic was powerful. I had many questions for him so that I would know what direction my research should take.
"I can't do that", Tokoyami-san said.
"Eh? Why not?" I asked.
"Abra-Melin is a highly wanted dead soul. There are rules in summoning the dead spirits of famous people. And you don't qualify for that and I don't have the authority to do so."
