I knew something was wrong the moment I fell off from my bed. My eyes were still heavy thanks to the lack of sleep which resulted from me getting so engrossed with my research that I forgot about the time.
Even if I was a magician, I wasn't the type to believe in superstitions. Everything in this world has an explanation, whether a scientific or a mystical one. However, there was one superstition that I was somehow aware of.
Whenever I would fall down from my bed, I was certain that I would have bad luck.
"Luck" was an actual aspect of Reality. Every person has an innate characteristic called "luck" that would affect the outcome of their decisions. There was always a question wherein one person successfully pulled off a task that only had a 10% success rate while the other failed a different task that had a 70% success rate. Countless magicians tried to uncover the truth of this and they managed to arrive at the conclusion that luck existed.
The reason why a person would fail a task that has a high success rate was simply because they were "unlucky." They might have the skills and resources to accomplish the said task but if they didn't have the "luck", they would still end up failing.
Unfortunately, there was no magic that would increase the luck of a person. There were many research societies that tried to figure out how to alter the luck of a person but in the entire history of magic, no magician has publicly announced that they accomplished a feat like that.
However, there was a lot of magic that could check the luck of a person. In fact, some of them were incorporated in divination and other fortune-telling magic in order to accurately predict the future.
You'll be getting a girlfriend in the near future! Mother's words echoed in my ears.
To be fair, divination magic only predicted what "should" happen in the future. As I've said before, the fate of the world is akin to a script of a play. The actors have their own lines and actions they should do at a given moment but they have the option to ignore and adlib on their own. That was the concept of freewill.
But there's a script for a reason. A play where the actors always ignored the script and simply did what they pleased would be a chaotic one. The same could be said for this world. If people would always disobey their parts in the grand scheme of things, then we are hastening to the end of all things.
That was why it was risky to even try to get a glimpse of the future. Normally, people weren't aware of the parts they have to play and everything would be in order. But once they knew what they should do, there was a chance that they would not do it and cause chaos.
In any case, I had a feeling that today would be an unlucky day. Some theories said that a person's luck was volatile. Common accepted theories said that luck was affected by the positioning of the celestial objects in the sky and since they were always moving, it wasn't far off if one would say that a person's luck could change in the next second.
As for why I think my luck would be bad, it was because every time I start a day by falling from my bed, my day would be a memorably bad one. It was most likely a case of "correlation does not imply causation." There was no way that the day would be an unlucky day because I fell from my bed.
"Wait a minute. Maybe because I AM unlucky and so, I fell from my bed", I muttered my realization as I brewed my morning coffee.
Before I would spiral down and think of my own theories, the handle of my coffee mug broke off and the rest of it crashed down to the floor. My heart almost broke into pieces as my unfinished coffee formed a puddle.
"... Maybe today is a day when I'm unlucky", I said.
I pointed my finger at the fragments of the cup and gathered my mana.
