Necromancers were magicians who manipulated death. It wasn't necessarily an evil magic since a magic is not inherently good or bad because the one who was good or evil was the magician using the said magic. But despite that, some people frown on necromancy.
Those who frown on necromancy were people who respect the sanctity of death. It was more on the vague concept of morality. As for me, I didn't care what kind of magic a person would use. The Millennium Nights Association would judge a magician based on HOW they used their magic instead of WHAT magic they used.
Also, necromancy wasn't a specific magic system. It was more of a classification. There were many magic systems that used necromancy such as African Paganism and Persian Magicology. Even my main magic system, Kabbalah Numerology, had magic that let me manipulate death.
The very core concept of magic was the Law of Exchange. A magician would always give up something in order to create a miracle. Most of the time, that exchange would be the mana of the magician. However, some magic require more than that and thus, magicians have to do rituals.
Hoshimachi-san led the way to the school that the ritual supposedly took place at. When we arrived there, I could sense the residual magic in the area. However, that wasn't the thing that caught my attention.
"...Seriously? My school is the one where the ritual took place?" I asked.
"Oh. We're going to be classmates?"
"Who knows? There are different classes in my year so the chances aren't that significantly high. And that's assuming we're in the same year.."
"And what year are you in?"
"I'm in my second year already."
"Then there's a chance we'll be classmates!"
The school was closed down but no one was guarding it. There were construction supplies scattered around the place but the workers were nowhere to be found. That was great. We could easily sneak inside.
We entered the hallway and I saw the damage. Or at least, the remains of the damage. It was under construction and there were several tools lying around. However, I wasn't interested in that.
"With my eyes, I observe.
With my ears, I listen", I chanted and my senses sharpened.
This... is interesting.
"Say... Was the necromancer who came here a supernatural creature?" I asked.
"That's what the others were saying."
"I knew it."
The residual mana in the area told me that the magic system used in the ritual was completely foreign. It might not be much but I encountered many magic systems already thanks to my job as an Enforcer.
For starters, magic systems were often derivatives from an older one. For example, my Kabbalah Numerology was a derivative of the Practical Kabbalah of the Jewish mystical traditions.
Practical Kabbalah used amulets and other incantations in order to interfere with the principles of the natural world. Kabbalah Numerology first appeared during the late 17th century back.
Instead of using amulets and other incantations, Kabbalah Numerology took all of the concepts and rules of the world and interpreted them as catalogs of numbers and numerical formulas. By manipulating those numerical relationships, a magician could create miracles.
That was why a magician could tell if a magic was from a western or eastern magic system. A skilled magician could even identify what magic system it was derived from.
