When the door to Jorrvaskr opens, Vorstag, Vilkas, and I all look up. It is late and everyone else is in bed. It's been months. I am not sure how long, but Aela and Red left months ago. But when they walk through the doors, I freeze and turn to watch Vilkas.
His face lights up. "Farkas?"
Farkas, who was holding hands with Red, runs to his brother's side. Red sits carefully in a chair, and Aela says she will get Danica from the Temple of Kynareth because she just knows that Red is about to give birth. To twins.
Vorstag just stands there, unmoving and staring at the door. My heart aches for him. He looks at Red, who was watching him as well.
".... she's not coming back, is she?"
Red sighs. "I'm sorry, Vorstag. She .... she's dead."
He clenches and unclenches his fists and stalks out of the room. I'd go after him, but.... I think he needs to be alone.
"How are you alive, brother?" Vilkas asks Farkas.
"You can thank Red for that. She went into Hircine's Hunting Grounds, and she somehow found me."
"Well, I had a little help," Red says.
We all look at her. She smiles at the boys. "An old friend. He still called me whelp."
Tears fill Vilkas's eyes and he shockingly and carefully hugs Red. He tells her thank you and sits back down.
Farkas looks at his mate, a smile growing across his battle-hardened face. He gently strokes her swollen stomach and that's when Aela and Danica come rushing in. Tilma right beside them, moving swiftly for a woman of her age.
"Ever had any babies born here?" Torvar asks as he walks into the main hall of Jorrvaskr.
"Well,' says Danica, as she checks on Red, "It seems you will indeed have two young ones running around, brandishing swords and mugs of ale."
"Not till they're teens," Red says.
Farkas chuckles at her. "Leave it to you to be oh so joking when you are about to have a baby."
"Two, icebrain," Aela says, her tone affectionate.
Farkas growls at her. I smile and approach Danica. "Can I help at all?"
"Yes, your name is?"
"Call me Safi," I say.
"Okay, Safi, I need lots of rags and some vials. Can you do that for me?"
"I can get the vials." We pause and look up, seeing Vorstag stride in. "What?"
"Nothing," I say, feeling a blush. Malancath curse me, his girl just died and I am already pining for him, a NORD!
"Good," says Danica, winking at me discreetly. She looks at Aela. "Go to Arcadia. Ask her for her strongest pain potion and healing potions."
Aela nods and runs out with Vorstag. I head downstairs with Tilma, and we begin to gather rags, cloths, and towels. I am so glad that they're all back, well, save for Xylene.... I wish she'd be here too.
I'm sure she'd love this.
"Come on, girl, get your head in the game," Tilma says.
I nod, hating myself for such thoughts. I follow her lead, going on basic muscle movements. These babies will be delivered safely. And healthy, all of them, including their mother. I won't take any other option.
