Y/N sat at the dining table, taking her sneakers off. She huffs as she puts it next to the chair, on the floor. Looking up she can see Steve cleaning himself up in the bathroom. They had just gotten back from fighting 'The Winter Soldier' in the middle of a bridge, so there were some wounds that needed tending too. Steve makes eye contact with her, but she looks away and gets up to grab a wet cloth to wipe the blood on her arm and face. Y/N brings it to her upper arm and wipes the blood that was dried. Steve walks out and leans on the door frame. She hisses at the contact since the cut was wide open still.

As he watches her try to sew up her cut, he walks towards her.
"Here let me." Steve says as he pulls a chair out and sits in front of her.
"I'm fine Rogers." Her tone annoyed.
She sucks in a breath at the needle going through and he lets out an annoyed sigh.
"Stop being stubborn!" Steve pulls on her seat closing the gap between them. He grabs the needle and flattens out her arm again.
"You okay?" He asks focused on his movements. Steve knew that Y/N was shaken up from the Hydra attack. She used to work for them 10 years ago. They almost killed her when she tried to escape, so seeing them today was bound to bring up bad memories.
"I'm fine." She responds grunting at the pain.
"You suck at lying." His blunt words make her roll her eyes.
"Will you just drop it." She says through her teeth as he finishes up. He stops and puts away the materials. She wraps a bandage around the stitches and leaves the kitchen, walking into the guest room.

-THAT NIGHT-
Y/N laid in bed still thinking of the current events that happened. Hydra was a big part of her life, a part of her life she wishes she could forget but she knew that wasn't possible. That man. The Winter Soldier. She knew him, she tried to get him out when she escaped but she couldn't do it. After Y/N escaped she joined Shield and was never able to find him again, leaving her to believe they had killed him. But now she knows, he's alive.
Three knocks tapped her out of her thoughts, the door opened to reveal Steve.
"Hey..." His voice sounded tired and his faced confirmed his exhaustion.
"Hi." Y/N sat up and motioned for him to come and sit. He went over and sat looking at her.
"Are you okay?" He knew something was wrong, she didn't speak at all on the drive back to Sams house, nor did she speak at dinner. She shakes her head slightly and takes a deep breath.
"The Winter Solider. Bucky. I know him." She whispered, his eyes widened at her words.
"I worked in the lab in Hydra. I worked on the Winter Soldier case. I saw him every day, saw him get wiped clean of his memories for years. The screams and sobs. They were horrifying, I didn't want to my job, I couldn't. So when I escaped I tried to take him with me but..." Y/N's words tapering off as she starts to remember the scene.

"...but they caught us. Right at the end, they caught us and tired to take us back but we fought. We ended up making it outside but agents attacked us." She starts to cry.
"I tried! I tried to get him out! But there was too many and I couldn't take them all. They left me for dead, I was bleeding out in the snow. The last thing I heard was Bucky screaming for me. Then I blacked out." Her sobs become harsher as she brings her knees up. Steve is terrified by the story but he immediately comforts her. Taking her into a hug he rubs her back trying to calm her down. She sniffs and looks up.
"I'm sorry I couldn't save him..." He looks down at her with sad eyes.
"It isn't your fault. I don't blame you! You tried, that's all that matters." He offers her a small smile and she does the same. Y/N places her head back onto his chest and they sit there in each other's embrace for a little bit longer.

"Y/N?" Steve whispered. They were laying in her bed now, looking up at the ceiling. She had told him other stories of Hydra.
"Yeah?" She whispered back.
"Did he ever speak about me?"
She sat up on her elbows and looked at him. She smiled and chuckled.
"He spoke about you all the time."
"Really?" He was taken aback by her answer. Y/N nods.
"Yep. Well in the beginning at least. He would tell me stories of you two in the 40's. How you tried to beat up everyone and lost." He chuckles.
"He cared a lot for you Steve." She sighs.
"I guess that's why I hated you and tried to keep my distance when I first came to Shield. I knew that I failed getting your best friend back. I hated myself for leaving him. I couldn't handle you doing the same so I wanted you to hate me for a different reason."
"I don't hate you..." He looks into her eyes, being sincere about what he's saying.
"I never hated you. I thought you were stubborn and annoying at times but never hate." Y/N laughs at him. She waits a beat then speaks.
"We'll get him. I promise!" She says.
"I know we will. Just takes time." He adds. She nods and resumes laying on her back. They both let out a deep breath and turn their heads towards each other. He grabs her hand and she opens it up more to intertwine their hands. They knew getting Bucky back wasn't to be an easy task, but they were ready to do whatever they needed to get their friend back.
