"I can't do this!"
"Yes, you can."
"How can you be so sure?"
"You are strong. So repeat after me."
I took a deep breath. "Okay."
"Dylan is sick and doesn't want to see anyone."
"Dylan is not sick, he's not even in America..."
Holly quickly placed her hand on my mouth. "Shh, someone could've heard you!"
I nodded as she removed her hand.
"I know, but um I can't lie."
"Yeah I know. It's a trait you got from Mom. Okay, so don't think of this as a lie. Let's think of it as a fairy tale. We know that fairy tales aren't true, but are usually told to kids to make them fall asleep. Now we will only need this story for a few days or at the most, a week. So it's not forever, okay?"
I nodded slowly.
"So repeat after me. Dylan is sick and doesn't want to see anyone."
"Dylan is..sick and um doesn't want to um see um anyone."
"Okay, good. Now try to say it without saying 'um', okay?"
I nodded. "Dylan is sick and doesn't want to see anyone."
"Good! We're almost there. Now say it like a matter of fact and not like a script."
As I said it for the third time, I started to believe it myself.
"What do you think he has?"
"Who?"
"Dylan."
She sighed. "Lily, he's not really sick."
"Oh right."
"Okay, so when you see Mom and or Dad today and they ask about Dyl, just repeat the fairy tale sentence."
I nodded. "Okay, but what if they see right through me? They know that I can't lie!"
"Lilian, look at me."
I slowly made eye contact with my sister as I could feel my heart racing.
"You got this and at the end of all of this, the story is just for a short amount of time."
"Yeah, but what if they don't believe me?"
"Then I'll be there to back you up."
I sighed. "Thanks."
"Of course. Besides when the truth comes out about why he's not here, they'll be so overjoyed to care about the story that we told them. Also we're adults and they can't do anything to us anymore."
"Yeah I'm glad about that."
"Me too."
"Oh don't even! Miss Little Perfect!"
"I should get an Oscar for my decade performance of being your twin!"
"But how did you fool Mom?"
"I really don't know the answer to that question. Maybe she thought that I matured."
"Overnight?"
She sighed. "I dunno, Lil."
"I wished you could show everyone the real Holly someday."
"Yeah well that'll never happen."
"I could help you tell them."
"Thanks, but I doubt they would believe you."
